Double Syringe Epoxy
« on: March 28, 2007, 05:02:14 pm »

I have seen two part epoxy in a double syringe (one plunger) type pack.

Is this just for measuring, or do parts A and B mix in the nozzle?

I have seen mention here of someone using syringe to apply epoxy inside the hull and stop stringing. Is this what they meant?

It's just for measuring. You still need to mix the two parts to enable it to cure. These packs are intended as adhesives. To coat the inside of a hull you would need to use either polyester or epoxy resin, preferably the latter although it is more expensive, which is then mixed in a suitable container with the specified proportion of catalyst before "painting" onto the hull with a disposable brush.

My deck is on now, and there is a bit or reinforcing I need to do below deck. If I can find an easy way to get it done cleanly I will be happy.

Epoxy resin, great stuff. Been doing it myself this after noon.
Mix equal parts of resin and hardener then add minute amount [and I mean MINUTE amount] of methylated spirits.
This will turn mix from very stiff to runny.
Paint with a disposable brush.
For painting on I usually use 30 minute epoxy.

I was in the DIY store looking for some 15minute araldite, only had 90sec  :(

I did however notice some of these dual syringe type packages which claimed to mix in the nozzle. Can't quite remember what the material was for. Would have thought there was a good chance of making sure you could only use the pack once ;D

yep Ive seen it ,it has a twist in the nozzles that mixes them .they don't work very well and you have to clean the nozzle out (they say you don't) and the one I had was very slow cure.  they use it in industry but the mix part is a lot more sophisticated.Peter

Hey Tiger,

"there is a bit or reinforcing I need to do below deck. If I can find an easy way to get it done cleanly"

I use a fingerfull of car body filler, the two part stuff. Get a nice smooth fillet in the corners,

For this last tug I got some wood filler [two pack] because I wanted it very light (colour), its almost cream,
looks a lot tidier than grey..Tug

The only worthwhile pre-mix nozzles are about 3" long with mixing ribs all the way through. They are one use only, and don't bother with them unless you have a lot of expoxy work to do (you will waster 5mm or so just in the mixer). They really are production line items where you need maximum strength and uniformity of mix. And they are expensive (50p to £1.00 a shot just for the mixer which is single use)

I have tried the ScrewFix cheap double syringe epoxy - problem is that it is difficult to get an accurate dispense - the mechanism is too sloppy and there is too much air in the tubes. I have grasped the nettle and spent £25.00 on an industrial pack of Araldite Rapid - should last me a while - tiny blobs and cocktail sticks
