Rotary shaft seals and stuffing box
« on: December 22, 2011, 06:34:54 pm »

I planning on using a Rotary shaft seals which I purchased from Modell UBoat (http://modelluboot.de/) for Robbe U-47 and was wondering if it would be a good idea to add a stuffing box also. I'm in the US what would be a good grease for the stuffing box?

Thanks
john

You should be ok with standard Marine Grease, I use this in slow and fast prop shafts without problems.
There are many makes such as Castrol, Lucas, Rock Oil and can be found on the web and ebay etc in silicon gun size tubes so loads enough for models !

The shaft seals (simmerrings) remove the need for a stuffing box.

However the seals should be lubricated from time to time with a bit of grease. The seals are nitrile rubber, so you can use most lubricants on them.

Yes agreed, no stugging box needed, even if you were pressuring the the sub by using piston tanks. Just add any old grease for lubrication (rather than waterproofness) to the pint of contact of the seal with the shaft.

I'm "splitting hairs" here but these are oil seals so I use engine oil.

Go easy on the amount though - my oil slick has been commented on at our pond!
