Oh dear.....

Well painting figures is another skill I'm not blessed with then!

I'll just have to fit a bigger motor to this boat so the figures are more of a blur  :P ::)

Martin   your only problem is the colours are TOO bright .
Imagine yourself wearing that bright green or blue top , its not ever gonna happen is it ?
Thats the only fault I can see , unrealistic colours  ;)

Have fun and tone it down a bit , these beggars are supposed to of been at sea for the last 60 years (looking at them) so they wont be wearing nice clean new designer gear !  ;D ;D

.... are they a bit too ..."gay"??  ::)

I guess your right Shane, I was experimenting with various paints but obviously not very successfully. :P
Conclusions:
Not all paints are equal.
Artist paints are no good for these particular resin figures, they can be very patchy.
It appears that "Acrylics" seems to cover a whole host of paints types and not all types are sympathetic (unlike cellulose paints)
The figures were much easier to paint once undercoated.
Chose your colours carefully.
Paint light colours first and go over the edges.
Buy good brushes.
Citadel (warhammer) paints are excellent but too expensive - £2 bottle/tub.
You can't rush painting figures..... well you can and this is what you end up with!

..... and what's wrong with a bright green shirt ?!?!?!

Here is my first attempt

Not sure that it has worked - particularly the scary eyes but not sure how to correct it, so has anyone any suggestions?
The shirt is perhaps a little bright and maybe the whole thing could do with a bit of a colour wash to tame it down.

Any suggestions anyone?

If you look at a photo of a face you will see there is very little white showing, particularly at these scales.  Yours looks a bit wide eyed because there is a lot of white showing.

I would apply a bit more of the flesh colour, very carefully from the outside edge and carefully close in the edges of the eyes until there is less white showing.  That should improve it significantly enough to make you a bit happier.  As for the rest a bit flatter and a bit of a wash in the creases will have a significant effect.

I used to paint miniatures and found Andrea acrylic paints to be the best.  Very good coverage.  Large parts of my tug are painted using it as the colour range is very good.  Available in this country from Historex.  Historex can also supply an excellent CD by Andrea on how to paint figures faces etc.

Well I modified and painted the german figures.
First attempt, not perfect but not too bad.
The Feldgendarme lost the bottom part of the great coat, but now has a leather jacket. A dirty pair of jeans and wellies.

more detail.
I am not worried about some of the moulding for straps, as this is not visible at one meter. Well not with my eyes anyhow  ::)

Barry,

I had a good read through this site first:

http://www.paintingclinic.com/

and then simplified some of his techniques!!

Have a good read through the Clinic tab, there is some very usefull stuff there.  I actually only used a base colour, a darker shade for the shadows and a lighter shade for the highlights and only basic blending.  I also deliberately did not paint the eyes.  Most figures at this scale would not actually have eyes visible anyway and those that I have seen with them painted sem to look a bit unrealistic.  Figures on ships at sea really would have thier eyes relatively closed and at 1/35th you would be very hard pressed to see them anyway.  That's my excuse for not making a mess of them anyway!!

As for paints, I used Humbrol matt enamels, although I wouldn't mind having a go with acrylics sometime.  Enamels do give you a bit more time for blending though and I suspect that with acrylics to get a similar effect you would have to use more shades to get an even transition as they dry so much quicker.

Bunkerbarge,

You must have read my mind....The techniques seem very complex, fine for diaramas and the like....I will do as you did and use a base colour and a couple for highlights and shadow...We will see what happens..

Cheers,

Barry

I used cheap model acrylic Angel Brand. And thinners.

I have seen Tamiya recomended and a lot of recommendations ofr World of Warcraft stuff, but I hear it is very exspensive.
