This happened to me a couple of years ago - all it needed was a change of password, something that I should have done on a regular basis.  The bad guys hack the service provider (hotmail in my case) and grab a truckload of identities and their passwords, which they then sell on to other undesirables who can then send offers for pharmaceutical goods or tempting false links to everybody in your online address book with the appearance that you were the sender.

Other than changing my email address and blocking the unwanted emails, Any ideas how you stop getting all the spam when someone else's email address book is hacked.
Changing my password won't stop me getting the spam.
Recently happened to my Son's, hotmail account, address book and now I keep getting all this Spam about gambling, Viagra etc to my legitimate address.
No doubt everyone else in his address book is in the same boat.

That's about it really - change your email, or get another spam filter in line somewhere, but even with the best of them, you'll always get some rubbish through.

Derek,
I use outlook express and whist I also have Outlook installed am lazy in setting it up and learning how to use Outlook.

Outlook express has similar function which creates a blocked senders list and dumps all future emails in deleted box.
Problem is these spammers send from differnet address's.

To date have at least 30 spams all about the same subject but each from a differnet destination which I block on each occasion.

Using the Govt reporting spam sytem doesn't help because the spammers I am told hop from ISP to ISP.

It beggars belief that Hotmail haven't got better security.
You wonder if they are worth the effort. <:( <:( <:(

Where the spam originates from someone who has been hacked, the cure is to have them change their password.  As simple as that.  Changing spam settings on your own machine will likely block legitimate mails from those who have been hacked.

If you're computer is infected with a trojan or worm, passwords can be harvested from your machine and emails sent using your accounts.

To find and remove this malware, download and install these two programs. Run a full/complete scan from one program, then do it again from the other program. Then repeat both programs to be sure. They find stuff that the other misses. It can take a few hours to do a full scan, but you will have a clean machine afterward. I don't keep them running in the background as it slows the computer a bit, but you can do this if you want. Just run them every so often to make sure you stay clean, or run them when you suspect a problem.

Sometimes Hotmail can be hacked without a trojan present, but Hotmail doesn't want you to know this.

Cheers and Merry Christmas!

Thanks Darren,

I was a bit more fortunate and only had 11 items removed, which is still 11 too many.
