Any motor suggestions for a scale 51" x 13" displacement hull with twin 45mm handed 3 bladed props?

I don't know the all up weight, as it hasn't been in the water yet to see the amount of ballast that it needs.

I'd prefer not geared (or toothed belt etc), as I would like to try and build the motors into some scale engines (so running cool - or stone cold - would be nice).

I've got a couple of 12-18v Buhlers which are very quiet, but the wires running into them seem awfully thin, and any number of unmarked 3 pole industrial Johnsons (I'm guessing the ones with the can about 7cm in length are 700 equivalents) but again no voltage markings.

It just seems to me that 540/600 types don't seem man enough and the 900's are a bit of an overkill - but I have no evidence for this.

Any of you knowledgable people want to chip in?

Cheers

Lance

If you want to cover them with scale engines then what is the max diameter you can use??  This will determine the motor range you can fit.

Fast Scale, Slow Scale, Medium speed scale, the type of vessel would help.
What is the preferred voltage?

Lance,
I'll be putting two big buehler 12v in my 51" boat.
will drive her to her 9 knott scale speed very nicely.
neil.

Sorry Bob, it's our fault as we three know it's a 51ft Barnett Class Lifeboat .

Sorry guys :-)

Anything up to about 45mm diameter could reasonably be hidden - the scale engines are about 8"" long, 2" across and about 3" high.

(Don't you just love mixing units!)

From the diameter limit your best bet will probably be one of the 700 series. Something along the lines of the 755 from Action,  42 mm diameter and about 5-6000 rpm at 12 volts.  Nice torque to give reasonable scale speed with coarse pitch scale props plus a bit extra if needed at full throttle.

If you want the motors to run cool then perhaps plump for the 900's , I should imagine all up weight will be around the 13-14kg mark so you will need a bit of power to attain scale speed.

Problem with the 900s is they are 52 mm diameter Russ.

Yes sorry Mike, only just seen what Lance said regarding fitting into dummy engine cases....

555's would be fine, or 755's if you really must...

I think 555,s would be underpowered for a 51inch Barnett, especially with the heat generated in the engine casings...

Maybe, but with 45mm 3 bladers theyd be perfect....
