Christmas holiday springer
« on: January 02, 2012, 08:23:58 am »

all
built my first springer in 3 days over the Christmas holiday,  in the true spirit of the thing i just used scrap materials that i had lying around. the only items bought were a propshaft and coupling so this is a very cheap model

day one, hull from 1/2" ply and scrap pine strip

day 2 superstructure and pusher knees

day 3  superstructure and deck surround/wall

ok its not finished...   i only did a couple of hours each day

if i had really got stuck into it i would of had it painted by now!

Happy New Year

One stage beyond sturdy!

  Won't need much ballast I guessing!    :o

yep!   she is one "robust" little model :-))

built at 18" x 8" with the 1/2" ply i have used being the cheap "packing case" material its probablly around half the weight of the equiv. Marine Birch Ply.  the model as you see it in the last photo with all the woodwork and superstructure complete weighs in at  just under 3 pounds.   i thought there was a minimum weight for the finished models for competition of 7 1/2 pounds?

power will be speed 600 though i have a choice of motors, and batteries will be nimhs, the model is primarily to be used to retrieve stranded model boats and flying boats not for competition use

A nice tidy model, wont the extended pushing posts below water make it difficult to steer?.

Happy new year.

OK
the cold weather has played havoc with trying to get some paint to dry on the springer..  but after leaving each coat to dry "in the warm" before putting on the next coat...

here she is...

and "The Sherman" it is..

obviously not finished, this is it basically with the masking tape removed...  all the gear is in and its ready for the maiden voyage (anyone got an icebreaker?)

tips the scales ready to sail with batteries at just over 5 pounds  and needs at least a pound/ pound and a half of ballast to bring it anywhere near the waterline... she is way too buoyant too the point of being borderline "unstable"

so you "MICK TAKERS"  owe me an apology! >>:-(

oh, any resemblance to one of my fireboats is just coincidental....   its all just down to what paint i had left over!

Hi David, your springer project and sence of humour  promted me to use some scrap material I had lying about
and I have also just built a Springer to use as a rescue/fun boat.
Sherman is a nice little boat and well named.
I will post some photo,s of my effort on the forum later in the day.

well our wonderfull (and rather confusing?) weather allowed the first sea trials of "The Sherman"

still a little under ballasted  she performed extremely well..  turns on a sixpence, and will comfortably "push" boats 3 times her size!

a little belter!  made everyone smile :D

a really happy little boat :-))

David, that looks like it is going great, Like the colours but wonder if it would have looked cooler varnished.

Any pictures of the insides, I always like to see how others go about positioning the electrics and things.

Hi David

I've just got reinstated on the Mayhem site, having got lost in the general collapse earlier and have just come across your 'Sherman'.
I too built my 'Zebedee 2' as a rescue boat, mainly for if I was sailing alone ( so it's set up on my old Radio Link Tx/Rx system ) but it's turned out to be a favourite and much more robust for use with my younger grandsons than the Fireboat and Seaplane Tender.
Your Springer looks great, hope all is well with you,

Best Wishes
Chris
