Maybe it's the SS Brittanic circa 1890. Am I warm?

Looks like SS Alaska 1881?
If same then her local connections were her maiden voyage was from Liverpool and her owners were Guion Lines.

Dave
........ LB or anyone, can you remember the name of the small pub on the corner of Regent Rd and Porter St (or just possibly Vulcan St)

Very little difference between the Arizona and Alaska, but is the Alaska coming out of New York in 1895.

Regarding pubs in the Regent Road area, no idea about such establishment's the only one that I know of is the Bramly Moore or is it the Lloyd's A1, see I'm completely ignorant of such places apart from the late much lamented Franks cafe.

I'm completely ignorant of such places.

The pub I asked about (a childhood friend lived there) is now a hole in the ground.
To take advantage of your ignorance of pubs LB  here is another one. :D
A Pub / ex pub? (not too far away from the first)

To show my complete ignorance of the big grey boys - why the clock?

HMS Capetown?  Carlisle Class cruiser.  Whatever ship she is the clock is a "Range Clock" which had to do with gunnery though  I've never figured out why!

Well, the pic of the range clock perports to come from HMS Caradoc so I presume that the top pic is of the same vessel.

Beat me to it by seconds LB. It is the HMS Caradoc. Launched in 1916 and scrapped in 1946. It was probably best known for its involvement in The Nanjing Incident when a large flotilla of allied ships bombarded the city of Nanking in defence of foreign nationals within the city from Nationalistic ans communist forces. You are all extremely knowledgable. Well done.

Regarding the clock face, prior to WWII the most accepted formation for battleships was the line of battle where ships lined up nose to tail and fire broadsides at the enemy. The British found that due to poor visibility in the North Sea together with funnel and gunfire smoke, it was rare for all the ships in the line to be able to see the enemy so large clock face like dials were fitted to the front of the foremast and to the rear of the stern mast. Once a ship had found the targets range it would then display the settings on the dials to the other ships in the line. Similar dials were fitted to the gun turret sides to show the angle of fire to the target. The were removed when radio communication and radio equipped spotter aircraft gave instant and accurate transfer of target information.

Well done LB you have identified an old pub in Seaforth near the docks, and you got it so quickly too O0

The gunnery shown is bombarding the Bolshevik position on the Estonian coast of the Baltic sea.

Did I, amazing, since there is absolutely no chance I would have known about it since I would not have frequented such an establishment in that area in any circumstances whatever. However, I may well have passed the said establishment on numerous occasions on my way to Waterloo (and beyond) where I was born in a private nursing home on this day numerous years ago.

I shall be away until the afternoon of tomarrow so if any one would like to pick up the baton so to speak then please do so.

Very Happy Birthday LB

If you lived in Waterloo then you certainly passed the pub - and like you I have never been in it either;
but before sat nav's were around knowing the pub names was probably the best way of getting good
directions to places. I know countless pub names in the N West and N Wales

Back to the important stuff ........ HAPPY BIRTHDAY LB  :-))

Seems that we've been ignoring "Name That Ship" for a while so here's one to start the ball rolling again.

Thanks TailUK .......I don't know the vessel but ask...could it be MV Sir Francis Drake?

The reason I ask is the clew offered on top of the nearby building....straight above the vessels name board

....and it looks like an image of Drakes face  {-) .....Derek

Not the Francis Drake I'm afraid, Derek, though I see what you mean.  I photoshopped out the name next to the face as it was a bit of a give away  to the location.
It's not an British boat and if you look at some of my recent posts you might get a clue about where this vessel is.

Just old fashioned detective work based on some experience.  Well I recgonsied the numbers for what they were which didnt require any thought just some pre-existing seamanship/navigational knowledge, the photo seemed to be of a memorial book/commissioning book cover type not dissimalar to the standard naval offering and with the emblem it was obviously a naval ship, and as your from a land down under it had to be Australian,  therefore something close to your heart and what bigger naval tragedy for an Australian was the loss of the Sydney.  Well thats what I thought so a quick check on the words HMAS Sydney and the co-ordinates confirmed my guess.
