My DUKW
« on: January 08, 2012, 08:07:40 am »

These are the pics of the 1/10th model I am building . I am chain driving both rear axles from a drill motor and gearbox which according to their info delivers 600RPM  so hopefully should be arround 6KPH .
The prop is 55mm dia and will be driven by a  540 motor . It may be direct drive or 3:1 reduction , we will suck it and see .
I know the wheels are not correct  , but I have sent two emails to two companies in Germany that supply the right size and treaded wheels  ,and still no reply !
The rear axles are running on a pivot point and that means I can manage a 30 degree plus slope with both axles still in ground contact , and the front axle will also have a centre pivot point and that will mean the front wheels can also be in full contact on uneven ground .
Thanks again to those that have sent  me info on their models and wheel suppliers .

I think you will find that that they are front head lights and side lights. On the rear you should have two red lights  and one white running light.I sent you some pictures of my model did they show this detail. Behind the drivers seat you should have a small mast  this fits in the cargo deck area the mast contains navigation lights.

Hi Stan ,
thanks for your reply . No I didn't get any pics of your cockpit layout , your driving system , or the mast behind the seat . If you could send those , I would appreciate it .have you got the Squadron book on the DUKW , as our library and bookshops dont have one here ?

Malcolm,

If you haven't already done so, go to Google, select images, from top selection and search for DUKW amphibious vehicle, or if it works, click on the link below and then save whatever pics you need.

Malcolm,

If you put your location in your profile, then that should eliminate suggestions to ring people on the other side of the world.

Not too many would have picked up by your signature, Malcolm NZ, that you are a Kiwi.  O0 O0 O0

From left to right
Headlight (yellow bulb for continental use (France/Germany/Holland)
The next two are 'blackout lights' (slot to reduce exraneous light output)
I think Indicator and sidelight.

Try a search for ATTURM DUKW.

I built a DUKW  from a kit supplied my Deans Marine . The axles i got from Robbe in Austria and used aircraft wheels as i could not afford the German ones , i was lucky that i was working with a German girl and very cheekily use the shops phone to call . I have used a pair of Graupner motors for the drive and a large brass prop . I did have problems with the steering but thanks to the guys in my brothers model engineering club i got it sorted now to wait for good weather to take it on the water . If you look on Marine Modelling website theres lots of help there. Good luck  :-))

Thanks derek for your reply. At this stage , the chain is just steel as are the sprockets , mainly so I can prove the drive system will perform ok . Rust on the chain and sprockets had crossed my mind , but it's just not a problem at the moment . I will probably change it in the future .
