Drilling lead
« on: January 08, 2012, 06:01:44 pm »

Info please on how to drill holes (6 to 8mm dia) in lead blocks for keel bolts. Pilot?, Speed?, Lubricant?. I would be using a pillar drill.
Confident several of you will know.

toby - when I did my keel bolt holes I started with a 3 or 4 mm bit and then moved up to the bigger size - drilled exceedingly slowly and
had no problems at all

Paraffin is the standard lubrication, keep the drill slow & watch the clamping as it grabs the bit.

I prefer spade bits to twist bits for drilling lead but your holes may be too small for them.  Spade bits are less likely to heat up.  If you let twist drills go too fast, the lead heats up, gets greasy, and will then grab the bit when you slow the speed and remove the heat and cause the bit to snap.
