Ex Scottish Fisheries Vessel - MY Steve IRWIN
« on: January 18, 2012, 10:03:01 pm »

Any information or background on this vessel would be appreciated.  Her current name is MY Steve IRWIN and is operated by the Sea Sheperd conservation group in anti-whaling actions in the southern ocean.

I have been told that she was originally built for the Scots as a Fisheries Patrol/Research vessel.

Sea Sheperd have modified her over the years, even to the point where she has an artic camouflage paint scheme this season.

Anyone able to offer some background and/or directions would be appreciated.

Any how, the steve irwin was a fisheries protection vessel, it is also identical to the old HMS Guernsey, Deans Marine do a kit. Obviously you dont need the guns etc but the shape is all their

It was called the FPV Westra
These boats were basically royal navy  island class patrol ships
Although the Westra and Jura were the fore runners of the island class
You can get island class drawings from jecobin

Thanks for the info.  I've done a search on http://www.jecobinplans.com/estore/index.php? using 'island' 'Guernsey' 'westra' with no luck.

Any links?

Sirmar Models used to do a 1:50 scale hull and fittings set for the Island class FPV.

I built a model of the Alderney some years ago.
Don't know whether they still do the hull, but it was a beautiful sailing model, and I did an article for Radio Controlled Boat modeller some years ago, it contained some photos of the real ship, I shot down in Liverpool at the time.
If you want as copy of it, I'll try finding it to give you some idea of what's on deck.

neil.
