Hi all,

I want to paint a fairly large plastic panel, by large I mean it's not a small bit of weathering I want to add, but say an area 1ft by 1ft square total surface area.
What would be the best way to go about getting a nice rust effect?

Doesn't specifically have to be a nautical rust effect, a dry one will do too.

"Sandblast" the panel using Iron filings and leave for a couple of days. You can get Stainless Steel rusty this way too.

Harking back to my days modelling tanks, you could try this.  After painting the panel, allow it to dry then use a sponge to dab areas with a mixture of paint and talcum powder.  This will replicate the rust scale.  You could then dust the "scale" using rust coloured chalk powder or crushed pastel crayons. This collects in the texture and can be sealed using, of all things, hairspray.

Use photo reference also, JCBs, bin lorries, skips, rusty old heaps tied up in harbour, it all helps..

a simple way is to paint your main colour first, than go round the edges with blacks,browns, orange to represent chip paint, then do the same for the hole panel  a bit like this

then by adding blacks,brown,orange you end up with this, hope this helps

That's tremendous. If it wasn't for the bricks behind the model I wouldn't be sure it wasn't real.
