SNS Les Trois Gunes
« on: January 25, 2012, 10:06:18 am »

Hello everybody,
I'm going to talk about my lifeboat model "Les Trois grunes".The name is coming from a reef at 4.4 miles west to carteret port located on the west cotentin peninsula coast. The lifeboat lenght is 14.05 m, 4.6m beam, 1.3 m draft, and maximum speed 26 knots.

I 've chosen  the 1/20 scale ,that gives a 70 cm lenght. This model is a scratchbuilt, and I thank the SNS crew to get me their boat plan. The hull is in poplar strips, cover with fiberglass and resin.

I had to sand hours and hours with putty of body adding before paints.

You can order one of the sistership's plan "la teignouse" to SNSM.Les sauveteurs en Mer. 31 cité d'antin. 75009 PARIS tel: 0033.1.56.02.64.64.The plan is composed witin 5 sheets and a photo's CD, price around 45 €.
So let's paint.I used an Paasche airbrush for painting the hull, with car paints.I started with the white antifouling and blue after.I used a tamya adhesive tape to seperate the 2 colours.

At bottom, there are 2 flaps which are used to correct hull sinking.I ve made these in Brass and plasticard before painting.
.
So the hull paint is nearly finished.

.
I ve just noticed I made a mistake in the subject topics, my modelboat name is "Les trois grunes" not "les trois gunes",I don't know how to correct it.
Au revoir

Hello Ned and Neil,
Thank you for your compliments, the hull looks good but it could be better. After the hull painting, I 've prepared an antislippery deck.I've done it twice because I was not very satisfied about the colour which was too sink.I've covered a first paint's edge and immediately I blow some powder on.I did not wait it dryed before adding a second paint's edge. The colour's deck seems to be different on each La Teignouse class.

I must admit that is very usefull to live not so far away from the boat you want to build.

Hello,
Let's talk about rails. These are made in brass, with a 2 mm diameter. Each one is weld with tin.I 've filed few hours exces of wed. There is 2 rails :one aroud the hull and another one at the back with ladders:

After this step, I painted with an aluminium colour n°56 heller.I drilled the deck and sticked rails with araldite glue. Now, the deck is ready to be completed withe few details such as a tank, ropes, adorn beating..

just one question Midori.............with the hull so advanced in design, is it your choice that you put propeller drive on your model, or is the actual lifeboat propeller driven and not water jet drive which I would have thought it might have been.

Hi Midori,
fine model you are building here. It looks good! :-))
Also, I build on this French lifeboat. My model is the SNS 142, "La Teignouse". I'm building my model in 1/15 scale. The wooden hull is positive for a fiberglass hull. The superstructure is formed from 0.5 mm aluminum.

Hello Neil and Michael,
Les trois grunes and La Teignouse Lifeboat have traditionnal propellers if ever they had water jet drive system I don't think I should be able to make it.

I'm very impressed by your model superstructure, michael.I've made mine in plasticard sheet, and for me ,I think it's easier to work with plasticard than aluminium.
As I told you in my last post, I give you more photos about the deck details.

I made the anchor in plasticard. For the lifeboatraft,I bought this one on cap-maquette website, but i had to improve many things to be similar as the real one.As you can see,the general arragement of the deck is different on each "La Teignouse" sisterships

So ,After the Hull building, let's start with the superstructure. This one was not so easy to make, because there is plenty sides.I had to make a cardboard size in order to maintain the sticking of the set.

I used a 3 mm plasticard sheet to make the superstructure, each side has been sticked with a cyanoacrylique glue.

When the set was completed ,I sprayed a primer before painting.I forgot to say that the cardboard size could be moved because I wanted to detail the inside superstructure.
Best regards

Thank you Neil,
So now ,the superstructure is ready to be painted.I have protected inside superstructure which was covered in 2 colours dark grey and beige.

As you can see on the last picture,I did not paint all the superstructure, because a part is embeded in the deck. And separation is helpfull to adjust correctly the slope.

I transferred 4 mm high vinyl letters on each side
I' ve just cut the windows in  0.3 mm clear graupner plastic. But, I don't know how to stick them ? Has anyone got an idea ?

Thank you

I use double sided microthin sticking tape.
I stick the glazing to the frame with one layer, and then the whole assembly to the superstructure with another layer...not much thicker than the layer of a sheet of paper.
and it sticks very well....obtainable from card and craft shops.

Hi,
I'm still building on my long way so far that I can stick the window. I do this but then this: The window frames on the wall cover by half. These are then glued directly to the inside of the edge. And then glue the discs inside the frame. I hope you can use this tip.
Midori, thank you, that I can present my model in your posts.
I started out just like you do with 6mm frames and clad with 2mm plywood. The hull but I have built in two parts in order to sharpen the edges better.

If you need images of the inside of the original, I can help you. What exactly are you looking for?

Best regards, Michael

Hello,
The assembly of windows moves forward well.
The supports of windows are painted in color silver. On the advice of a friend, I stuck windows on them supports with on some araldite glue. Then, with the same process, I stuck them on the cabin.

I hope I will complete my assembly this week.

Hello,
Thank you Dave, and sorry to answer so late. The hull shape was one of reasons I decided to build this model. The other one, was to build a lifeboat with the same quality level as english model boat builder (the level is high).I've painted a part of superstructure top in black.I will stick some vinyl letters on for the call sign.

I ve painted some more support windows and the back door.I will let it slightly open to give"life" to the model

I've made this access door in plasticard.
I will stick all parts this week.
Photos are on the way

Hello everybody,
Thank you dave.Let's talk about windscreen wiper. Each one is made in 0.3 mm plasticard both sheets and strips. In order to represent them correctly,I had to cut 12 pieces. It took me about 3 hours to make them.

Pieces are so fine that I have of to paint them with airbrush not to make a heap of paint.
