What scale is the tug ?

Robbe and Graupner both do ladders.

Most people on this forum won't believe me but I actually made a ladder for Jan's Puffer, using toothpicks and coffee stirrers!

Thanks Umi - I'll read that thread later - looks good

What I have trouble with (Newbie) is there are lots of items for sale but they don't give a scale size.
Like the ladders on a link above - they do give distance between rungs, but I can't relate that to a
real ladder. If I wanted to build a ladder only the length would seem obvious to me. Is there some
sort of a reference table anywhere?

The Northsider is 1/24 scale. the ladders/ steps need to be 100mm -105mm by 25mm wide, have looked at all the most popular companies graupner, robbe etc, MMM have the closest, but still not really near enough. one thing I hate making is ladders, or should I call them steps really.
All the manufactures idea of 1/24th scale is different. MMM do a set of steps that are 100mm by 16mm, may have to settle for those.
Thanks for all your answers, will keep looking.

these are the best I have seen, expensive, but very good, will have a look, I need 4 of the biggest, would be £80.00
will probably buy some stuff from this site, some really good items.

Hi Andy, try modelling timbers, various sizes and be cut to length.

Hi Anndy if it is steps you are after why not make them your self out of brass, they will look better than castings and you will get satifaction out of it, plus it is not that difficult to make, cheaper than buying in.

Dave (Norsman)

For your ladder sizes, measure your full size ladder, divide the dimensions by the scale you want, and Bob's yer Auntie!

If you cant get exactly the size in scale you want, make yourself, or buy just a little under, in my opinion a little smaller looks better than oversized.

Hi John - thanks for the info. It has also made me decide to keep some sort of word log for useful posts I have seen.
I see things and think that is great and then can never find them again - must get organised.

Hi Ian - again thanks. I understand that length of ladder divided by say 32 etc, but it is width and rung space I wonder about.
So if you knew length and scale left you needing 100mm of ladder, how would you work out the other dimensions for yourself?
That was why I thought there may be a chart somewhere for dimensions.

Dave,

Width will scale down as well, same as length. What I do for spacing is work out how many rungs I need, multiply that by the diameter of the material to be used, subtract that from the overall length and divide the remaining number by the number of spaces between rungs. This should give you spacing between centres of the rungs.

Hope that helps.

I think I need to measure the width and rung spacing of a real ladder (just once so I have the dimesions) and then just apply the scale math.

A big ladder or a small one?  :-) They do differ in size (usually width) depending on the application.

Yes Colin :}  My three stage reaches the roof at the gable end. £140 and paid for itself already
three widths but only one rung spacing. Rung spacing was what I was having the real
problem thinking about. Now I can scale a ladder  {-)

Be very, very careful. Scaling ladders is a high risk activity. {-)
