Does anyone know where I might get some 1:40 scale figures? I am planning in livening my model up a bit, But I know that this is not a standard scale.

Thanks

Here is a couple of quick pictures that I took, I know they are a bit crappy but please bear with me, I was just excited that mayhem was back up and running again :-)
I've been doing the buoy's so I can give myself some practice first with styrene again.

The two other buoy's.. been enjoyable so far to build. The sketch you can see there is a template that I used to cut out supports for the
navigation buoy.

I promise that my next photo's will be of better quality.

I will be starting work on the hull soon, I am wondering before placing the plastic inserts for the inside of the Bulwark is it best to sand the fibreglass down otherwise I can imagine there will not be an even surface to glue to?

I've been working on the superstructure at the moment which has been quite enjoyable so far I have a few pictures to upload on my camera so there will be more photos to see soon.

i assume you're talking about plastic sheet to give the inner bulwarks a smoothe surface. Yes I would sand the fibreglass down to get rid of high spots. Then score it gently with a knife and the also the plastic sheet to give a key for the glue.

Cheers

Sorry for it being such a long time between posts, I've been quite sick lately so have not had the chance to be on here.
I've started assembling the superstructure which has been quite good, and my pin vice has been put to good use pre drilling all the holes for railings etc.

I found it a bit difficult to line up the wheelhouse windows which was probably something that I did wrong, with a quick message to Model slipway it was all sorted out.

I did position extra 6x3 rod to strengthen joints etc on the model. It has been a most rewarding project so far, with fewer problems than I anticipated as yet anyway :-)

Sorry to hear you were ill Michael - I hope you're all over it now.
It hasn't affected your build quality - it all looks good to me.
I'm looking forward to your detailing - I'll keep popping in anyway.

Thank you Dave for your concern, it was nothing overly serious or life threatening :-)
thank you for the kind comments on my model, I've progressed a bit more now than the photo suggests
I've got to really get more photos on.
You maybe wondering why I have not started on the hull, well I'm still saving up to buy the Radio control gear as money is quite tight these days, so I do not want to do any work on it at the moment before getting all the gear.

One area I have not had much experience is in bending small dia brass wire. I'm fine for doing longer lengths, with my homemade
jig. (block of hardwood and nails :embarrassed:) It's the small stuff I have trouble with. i.e. Handles for the hatches.
Any suggestions? I've had a couple from Ken already. What do you guys think?

Two pair of point nose pliers used as hand vise's
you will be able to use one as the angle former the other as the leverage to bend and to keep the rod as straight as possible except where you want it bent

Works for me   :-))

I wonder if one grade of Brass is more suitable than another for rails?

There's different grades of brass?? Having not worked with brass rod before I'm none the wiser. But the rod supplied with the kit seems quite tuff to bend. I do the small things like handles be bending a length slightly longer than is needed and then cutting to the required length.

Here are some more photos that I took today. This lot shows the wheelhouse windows lined up better.
I've been adding some detail parts like hatches etc. Stuff that can be added without making painting too difficult later. It's been a fun challenge so far, I've made my first hatch with brass handle. Not perfect but I like it anyway :-))

Unfortunately my macro function on my camera seems to have stopped working :(

Next week I'll be getting some filler to work in the gaps, I've also found that my pre drilled holes for the railing seem to be 1mm too low when compared with the stanchions, So I'll just fill it up with plastic and drill again. Unfortunately as you can see I've already glued on a section of the railing into the bridge side. I'm going to have to keep this as is along with the other side [so it looks even] and then fix up the other holes.

Until next time.

Hi Darren, I am building the MS Tamar with plastic card & I find it a little difficult. However I am sure it is mostly a matter of learning to use it though ( first time for me ). You can of course copy the parts on to ply if you so wish, you would just have to be aware of any weight difference. I am sure that there are members on here that can advise you better than I can. Good luck with your purchase, if you do buy this kit you will not go wrong buying from Model Slipway, the service is the very best & you can also find wiring diagrams to suit on ACTions web site done by the man himself, Dave Milburn, & he is also very helpful. Hi Darren

This is my first time building a kit like this [well I lie I had an aborted attempt with another kit from a well known English manufacturer. The kit arrived damaged and the white metal fittings were of very poor quality & none of the pre printed parts fitted together well.], before I got my kit I was wondering the same thing about how I would handle the plastic. But I do find the plastic card to be good to work with and very forgiving of any mistakes.
It pays to read the building steps very closely. [you do have to have a good visualisation of what it is going to look like]
A lot of the parts for the superstructure are CNC cut which makes life much easier. For the other parts as long as you have a good sharp Stanly knife and steady hand you can't go wrong. I follow the instructions by making a couple of runs with the knife and then from the other side 'push the part out'. [putting your fingures where the cut is.]

To be honest I'm finding working with brass harder, but it's nothing that can't be overcome.
The crew at Model Slipway are great and have given me a lot of great advise, I can't overstate how happy I am with the kit it's great.

If you get the kit I know you will not be dissapointed.

Regards
Mike

Hi Everyone

I'm taking a small break from my modell for a couple of weeks, I have not done too much lately just preparing the hull and sanding lots of P38 filler  :-) I will try to put up some pictures soon.

Thanks to those that are following this build.
