Latest completion - Tiny schooner.

Mary Sinclair 20'=1"      Scratchbuilt and completed on Wednesday.       These small schooners make very nice miniatures.

Thanks.
I am never relly sure where to post them.      As far as I can see, all ships are "working ships" or there wouldn't be any reason for their existence.    How about a section for Merchant ship models?     That would cover everything in this field from the year dot to the present day - just a thought.

Could you not start a post under "Working Vessels" and put your already built ships there and add to it as you build more ?

Not practical, I am afraid.    Mary Sinclair is the 255th since I started counting in October 1992!      There really isn't a great dea of interest in miniature merchant ship models  (by ship modellers), although those 1:1200 resin models seem to be ever-popular, but are a bit too small for me as I like to include rigging.    I am a bit of a dinosaur in  my shipmodelling activities and only rarely find anyone with similar constructional interests although they seem to be very popular from the point of view of looking at them!

Well I think they are amazing, as a shipmodeller I know I could not build one [too shakey] but I certainly admire your skill.

Sad to say I love looking at them which I assume is the reason for you building them and feel more of them should be put on this forum in the same place so we dont have to go

searching for them.

Looking back on the forum a lot of your photos have been remove, so we could do with some more Bob. :-))

Yes, I do enjoy building them, I have built them since the early 1950s.    Then I went to sea for 32 years and continued to build them all that time.    Then I left the sea in late 1992 and took it up full time, but have retired since then and on retirement (& pension) decided to stop building them, but couldn't.     So now I have given up trying to stop.      I do have a section somewhere here, but haven't looked for it for some time (I suppose it is still here).   I was here when Martin first started Mayhem.   This picture was taken (unknown to me at the time in the early 50s - I am still using the same vice 60 years on).

Yes, at least 255, but I only started counting in October 1992 when I left the sea, but before that, goodness knows how many, but of course, I couldn't build them as fast when I was  at sea.       But on five-week voyages from Southampton - South Africa and back I usually managed one a trip!    It has only been since the digital camera came in that I have obtained photographs of all new builds.    Some earlier ones I never photographed, but sometimes, models turn up on Ebay that I built more than 37 years ago.    The last one to re-appear was listed at 99p with no reserve.   I had sold it in 1972 for £16 and it went for over £400 a few months ago!

Hi Dave,
Patience is one thing I don't have much of!     I like to see the job up and running in the first couple of hours and finished within two or three weeks.    I certainly couldn't spend months and months building anything as I am always thinking about what to do next.     Miniatures are not all that difficult as there are no knots involved anywhere.   All the rigging is just glued on in straight pieces.    As it is just copper wire, it can be made straight by simply stretching it slightly with two small pairs of pliers.   Then it is cut to length, picked up with tweezers, each end dipped in glue and placed in position on the model!

I went straight from 8'=1" to 32'=1" literally overnight in the early 70s and found the small ones easier from the start.

If you look in the "Your Models" section under "Bob" you will find some more images.    They were put in years ago from my first digital camera that was not very good, so they are slightly fuzzy!

Thanks Tassie,
I think  I must be one of the last who does miniature scratchbuilt.   I hardly every come across anyone else who builds them.    The general feeling seems to be that because they are small, they are more difficult, but I have never found them so for reasons given above - no knots etc.    Neither do I have to bother with microscopic bits such as ringbolts, splicing, rivets etc.   But the Mary Sinclair is planked using paper planks over a solid hull.    You can see more on my website via my profile here.
