Batteries...does size really matter?
« on: February 15, 2012, 10:31:22 am »

Apart from the physical size of the battery pack, what's the difference between a 4 cell pack of 3000a/h sub-C sized cells and a 4 cell pack of 3000a/h AA sized cells?

Given the fact that both packs have the same voltage and the same capacity cells, and running the same motor, would the AA cell pack give the same run time as the sub-C sized pack?

Does that make sense?

the bigger sub c cells give more amps than aa cells.

As long as the motor driven from the aa cells is drawing the amps within the limitations of the aa cells then the run time would be same.

How? If both packs are the same size...ie, 3000a/h, how does that work?

Think of it a bit like a packet of Pringles compared to a box of biscuits. They may both have the same number of snacks inside. But if you share round the Pringles everyone has to wait to get a Pringle out of the narrow top, whereas the biscuit box has a much wider opening - and lots more biscuits can be served at the same time.

Mmm... I feel peckish now...

One of the limiting factors is the heat generated by the chemical reaction going on inside.  A bigger cell will get rid of unwanted heat better than a smaller one, so a same capacity C or D cell will deliver a higher current more comfortably than the corresponding AA.  I don't know of any effective battery cooling devices - anything like that would probably use up any weight or size advantage.

DG...now that's how I like a reply, proper sweeper driver's language, that!

Thanks both of you, it looks as though I'm going to have to find my old shoehorn and fit Sub C packs...

Cheers,

Or biscuits, they seem to offer better run times than Pringles, mind you, the packets make good speaker cones!
I may have missed the point, however, I am now hungry....
