Propellors for HMVS Cerberus
« on: February 16, 2012, 01:31:12 am »

First my apologies if we end up with two messages, I posted one last night but it seems to be sailing around the Internet never to be seen again.

I've started making a 1/72 model of the Cerberus which for those who don't know of it was/is an early monitor built for the Australian state of Victoria's navy in the 1870s.  The question I have for the Forum is does anyone know where I can get propellors that would suit. They are very Victorian in shape, see picture attached, with the blades having straight sides and ends, not the rounded ones that came into being a bit later.

Anyone got any ideas, they will be about 50mm diameter, and strike me as very much a feature of a model from this era.

thanks for looking

Tony....the flat ended blade profile look very similar to blades from current Kort Nozzle style propellers.......there are also a number of specialist model propeller manufacturers ....George Spriel? Swite?...I am sure another member will correct my spelling error

As your build progresses please post some images..... O0 .....Derek

It might be possible to 'grind or file' a modern prop to the shape you require. You could start with a 55 mm prop to cover the diameter when you reduce the top of the blades.

Thanks for the ideas,  I have thought of grinding down a larger prop, but wondered whether I would run into trouble with being a bit out and then having an uneven unbalanced prop.  One other suggestion was making one out of sheet brass, but suspect that similar problems may occur.  I'll follow up the name given.

I have few photos of the hull frames and balsa planking, I'm just starting to fibreglass so will put up some photos soon.
