Large Model Boats.
« on: February 20, 2012, 02:29:42 pm »

Large Model Ships.
At present I’m busy transcribing all 560 pages  of a long defunct Volume called “Model Ship and Power Boats” covering the years 1950-51-52.  It’s a real eye opener.
The enclosed pic from the volume may be of some interest.
The pic shows the stern sections of 3 models being built by the Northampton firm of Bassett-Lowke. The man at work gives an idea of the scale of the models.
I’ve been interested to discover that even back in 1950 kits of models were available….although the majority of builds were “scratch”.
It’ll be a short while before I’ve finished this marathon, but when I’ve finished Anyone who wants a copy (on CD) can have one free. BY.

Hi Bryan,

interesting indeed - any indication where and what the models were used for?

Bonjour matelot. I've got no idea (yet), so your guess is as good as mine! Bryan.

Quick second thoughts.....being published in 1951, and having a bit of background info....I think they could well have been part of the Maritime section of the Festival of Britain (1951) that I went to as an 11 year old! BY.

Fascinating, they are big models .... could well be for the Festival but would anything like that be used for training skippers?

I'd really like a copy if possible, let me know when you're finished and how much you'd like for a copy as you'll have expenses, cheers !  :-))

The photo shows the ships actually in situ in the "Sea and Ships Pavilion" on the South Bank.  The second from the left is the liner "Orcades"  I think they were only part models, just the stern sticking out of the superstructure.  I remember seeing Basil Spence's working model for the building design in the collection at the Royal Institue of British Architects back in the 1980s.

I found this.

I'll put a post on here when I've finished (only another 160 pages to go). Normally what I ask is for the recipient to send me a blank CD and a self addressed envelope. That way I never get to touch "money". Cheers. Bryan.

Thanks for that...makes everything a lot clearer. I wish I could remember seeing them! Bryan.

Interesting is that the ship to Orcades right is the Whaling factory ship "Balaena"  Try putting whaling ship on a display these days and it'll end up burnt to the ground.  How things change in 60 years!

Very interesting , note that the ship on the right is a whale factory ship, note the slipway in the stern.

Great  project  It would  be  interesting   to bring such a   book up to date with a second volume . There are a  good many Hyper scale model ships around the globe that are documented  and some that are not , just a thought .

Funny how stuff evolves! From simple modelling, already we've gone past Coventry Cathedral and into Whaling!
But no matter how you look at whaling, the simple fact is that it went on for years (still does) and no amount of political correctness can obliterate it. Almost on a par with slavery, really....and that still goes on.
But the whaling industry history is still historically "interesting". Having visited South Georgia before the tourists arrived en-masse I can easily get a "feel" for what it must have been like. BY.

Hi Bryan, that is a great project you have going. I too would like a copy, but stamps from Canada will not work, we will have to find another way to pay you. Mick B.

Large Model Ships.

The enclosed pic from the volume may be of some interest.
The pic shows the stern sections of 3 models being built by the Northampton firm of Bassett-Lowke. The man at work gives an idea of the scale of the models.

My Grandfather worked on these. He worked for Bassett-Lowke for most of his working life, ending up as Works Director. Somewhere I have a picture of him placing railings on the model at the exhibition.

Bassett-Lowke also produced a 21foot long, 1/48th model of the RMS Queen Elizabeth in 1949. I have some photos of that somewhere. Lovely bread & butter hull, all scratch built, albeit by a workforce of 40.

That's my Grandfather doing railings again. I think he was promoted to bollards the year after this!

Chris, I have a copy of an original Bassett-Lowke catalogue dated 1937 on CD if you'd like a copy. PM me for more info. Bryan.

OK...all done and dusted...transcribing complete and my Master CD seems to be flaw free.
All I need now is to get copies to those who are interested enough to want a copy.
Easy enough within the UK...but sending a CD to Foreign parts is no problem....just send me an e-mail and it can be sorted out.
Within the UK, all I ask is for a self addressed envelope and a blank CD (preferably in a case....prevents damage).
E-mail or PM me with your address and I'll send you my postal address, Seemples.
As I said earlier, I'd prefer not to have any actual money within a transaction.
Anyone from "furrin" parts ....not insurmountable. Not for the first time!
Regards to you all. Bryan.
