well... theres nothing wrong with this firm, you order, you pay, and about a week later you get the goods.
i know lots of people that have used this firm.

the only thing i can say is; be carefull the total price of the order, there are restrictions on importing goods into the EEC, you could end up paying import duties.

you would probably find just a good a motor already in the UK for example http://www.giantcod.co.uk/brushless-motor-c-25.html
then you don't have any problems with import duties and any claims or repairs that might be otherwise required

I was putting an order together to check out their prices only to find the shipping cost was through the roof. In my business I have a lot of experience with shipping costs & I feel they were padding their low prices with very high shipping costs, this is common practice in mail order. Some companies make their profit off the shipping costs, I consider that kind of practice a scam & I do not trust  or deal with a company that makes their profit in this way. You have lots of good companies local & that will also give you good after sales service too. Look them up on the forum. Mick B.

I dont really mind the higher postage charges as it means less duty to pay :)

I bought a Turnigy 9 chanel transmitter and 3 8 chanel recievers from them last year.

The total cost was under £90 The stuff travelled all the way from Hongkong to GB for less than Parcelforce charged from customs to Coventry to Newark Notts.

Makes you think does it not :-)) :-))

Thanks for the replies chaps!

The ESC I referred to in my original post was the wrong one ! -
this is the one that was recommended...

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=11742

the only problem with ordering seems to be nonexistent stock levels...

Can anybody say what order values get the Customs and Excise people 'interested' ?
(that is, to start charging duty)

irishcarguy : I shall watch out for the carriage charges.

I think that when customs get interested can vary. Putting gift etc must be like a red rag to a Bull. They have seen it all before and are aware of low cost high postage scam as well.Going over £100 can get their attention. As so much stuff comes in some will get past regardless. You payes your money and makes your choice. John.

Over £15 for goods. Over £40 for a gift.

If you look at the website carefully when you make your purchase, you'll find there are ways around the tax problem.

They must give you guys a much better rate than us in Canada. Here is the total cost of a dummy order that I just ran on their system,I have a copy to back it up. Cost of goods $116.79 USD. Cost of shipping  $117.17 USD. This actually DOUBLES the cost of the items on the invoice, total invoice cost $223.78 USD. need I say more. No thanks. Mick B.

Did you select the flat rate international shipping- a lot cheaper.

I've always found shipping comparable with domestic rates, and very competitive for international rates.

I prefer to shop with UK retailers when possible, but for lipos and servos, HK are just unbeatable value, and the stuff works well.

Hi all, I normally use ACTion electronics, Cornwall Model Boats, & Westbourne, & am very happy with them .I have no connection to these companies. They give terrific service & advice & their shipping costs are at cost, no marking it up. Sometimes it is smart to check at your own backdoor first. I would buy local if what I wanted was available but boating is nearly nonexistant here. I am surprised that anybody that is in the hobby business is spending their money offshore, what would happen to your business if your customers took a leaf from your book ?. Mick B.

You must have been ordering some heavy stuff going by the postage table, that's the 9kg plus shipping rate. You might save a bit by splitting the items over two packages.

Postage rates for small items are a lot higher for you guys, but it evens up once you get into the bigger items.

When you order from Hobbyking, when do you actually give them your payment details?

Just placed an order for a servo, input in all my personal information and it shows that I have an order 'pending' which means unpaid and uncleared.  There was no place for me to enter my CC number... so of course it isn't paid up yet.

Usually when I order from a website, they take the payment details after shipping address and then send a confirmation email with the total price.

I usually find that the checkout process includes payment and delivery details. If you dont process the checkout, the order then remains active but unpaid.  :-))

I've bought quite a bit of leccie plane items, including a 1400mm Piper Cub and 2.4gig radio from HK. Cannot fault them once you have bought and dont follow what one poster has said. Airfreight is expensive but 40 US dollars to ship something from Hong Kong to the UK in under a week? And I've saved a shed load on the price of goods which is after all where a lot of the leccie suppliers get the same stuff they sell in the UK from.

Even so, they now have a European Warehouse so you dont pay as much carriage, no import duty as its in the EU. Only trouble is the EU Warehouse doesnt hold as much stock or is used a lot more by European modellers.

You pays your money and all that. I'd recommend them. Why buy the same stuff in the UK with an almost 100% mark up from a UK shop?

I have already given a shipment cost from Hobby King where a shipment to the value of $116.00 would cost me $117.00 to ship. I received a shipment today from Cornwall Model Boats, cost of order 81.63 pounds/pence, shipping cost 7 pounds 59 pence. It arrived in less than a week, U/K to Canada (we don't have a British pound or Euro key on our computers) I see nothing hard to understand in those figures, guess where I will be shopping & it won't be Hobby King. me bits have arrived from Hong Kong (and no duty to pay phew! :-) )

There is quite a kit of parts with the no-name-special
motor - KV1000. I am trying to figure out what they
all do!

Could anybody tell me what items A and B are for
on this photo ?.

Photo should be attached.. (postimage seems to have gone t*ts up again)

I screwed up a bit, in that I have ordered a HobbyKing
ESC and a Turnigy programmer card which is isn't
compatible.  I wanted a card since I am not sure that
I will be able to hear the beeps from the ESC if I program
it with the transmitter - the old ears aren't what they
used to be with regards to frequency response!

Has anybody got HobbyKing programming card they
would be prepared to swap for the brand new unused
Turnigy card ?
(The HobbyKing cards are out of stock on the website)

this is the ESC I have bought.

I shall put a copy of this post on the wants/swaps section

A & B are the prop saver bits - you don't need them on boats :-))

As long as the motor isn't connected to the propshaft you should be able to hear the beeps - they come from the motor not the ESC and are usually quite loud, (piercing).
