the olympic barge
« on: February 28, 2012, 12:33:35 pm »

Just caught the story about the olympic barge been towed along the river , ok it looks impressive in size but a couple of thing's to question.
1, why was there only one tug connected , yes there were two in attendance but the second was only an assistance tug and in the last few seconds of the pictures shown the barge was gaining on the towing tug , and the only way to stop the collision is for the tug to power up and take up the slack.
2, what happened to the painters , did they run out of paint as the rings are only painted on one side

that's it , ok it looks different in the night all lit up and that .
But i think it would look better if the rings were painted both sides.

What a waste of money. Its not surprising that few people support the Olympics. If the public had been allowed to vote on this , what would have been the result?

Wait until the bill arrives, then you get to pay for the fun you never had. The medals that the athletes get are not even pure gold what a rip off. Society is getting sicker all the time . Mick B.

I guess I disagree - the winter Olympics were in Whistler BC - we bought into the proram - watched a lot of it on TV - it was a high! A few years back we had the Commonwealth Games (in 94) - those too were a great function - we had an opportunity to participate in concerts, attend games - meet new people, share ideas, interests and sometimes make friendships. Remember the old phrase - there is no I in team!
Join the team - a great opportunity for everyone to see something different, enjoy - we're all watching.

Hi Mike in Victoria, Vancouver ran a very good games, that is not what I am talking about. The scarce public money spent by the city of Vancouver could have been much better spent on the homeless  & drug addicted on Vancouver streets which would have had a much better return on money spent than a few days of gloating on how we owned the podium. Games may be nice to have but spending tax money on such whims is not what we need in these economic times. The money is gone ,& we are left with the hidden debt & a few fake "gold" medals that are a very poor compensation to show for it, thats my take & last word on it. Mick B.

I hope the rings fit Seb Coe where the sun does not shine, I am paying for the Olympics and could not get a single ticket. Just one big con trick, if the general public tried a trick like that they would be arrested. >>:-( >>:-( >>:-( >>:-( >>:-( >>:-( >>:-(

the gold and silver medals have been made of silver since the 1912 games and the gold one is covered with 6grm's of gold

quote from Interesting Olympic Facts
Real Gold Medals
The last Olympic gold medals that were made entirely out of gold were awarded in 1912.

The Medals
The Olympic medals are designed especially for each individual Olympic Games by the host city's organizing committee. Each medal must be at least three millimeters thick and 60 millimeters in diameter. Also, the gold and silver Olympic medals must be made out of 92.5 percent silver, with the gold medal covered in six grams of gold.

Thanks Das, I knew the gold medals were not gold just gold plate. Don't you think it should be 100% gold & not silver, plated in gold, I think the winners deserve better when you see the money that is spent on the games & the royal treatment afforded the Olympic committee , usually in the tens of thousands of dollars(just for one member). Maybe but the amount of gold used would cost millions ,
we can't have it like a footy game where its just about the money
the medal is a symbol of achievement not a monetary reward.
That's what i think anyway.

Acheivment used to be purely by hard work. In a way it still is , but drugs, video recordings of movements and of course money meams that the playing field is not level. With drugs in particular its a case of staying one step of the testers. John.

The two most important things you need today to compete at that level is a top notch dishonest Chemist & a very good Layer to scare the testers, it has all become a farce. Then when the glory fades they die at a young age from the long term effects of all the chemicals, is it worth your life to win ?, I think not. What ever happened to the Roger Banisters of this world, Mick B.

a very good Layer to scare the testers,

Hey Mick
Would a Bantam  do the job, or are we talking Croad Langshans?  {-)

But you're right re drugs,  I'm convinced.

This ferry is kickin' the steroids
no more dreams of 1:24 -
it'll be a sensible 1:96 now.

The Junk and Smack builds will have to go too I suppose. %)
