Victoria/Upholder questions
« on: March 05, 2012, 04:22:32 pm »

Hi all,

we plan to build 5 Upholder submarines scale 1:36 in the next years. The technics will be with compressed air. I found a lot of pics but no 3 side view or drawings. Could anybody of you help? Are there drawings or model drawings of the sub? If someone know pages with pics (detailpics will be very useful) please feel free to post!

best regards

Bob Dimmack at OTW may be able to offer some assistance.

Some nice dry dock pictures on this page- http://rc-sub.com/projects/viewproject.php5?id=13

Hi Guys,

Unfortunataly we could't gather much information about this class. Anyhow, I have some questions about this type of submarine:

On the picture below, there is a kind of grating above the bow rudder. We call it "Rabbit Cage". What is this for?

Thanks for helping.

Looks like a casing vent to me.

And this is suppost to...?

I have no clue what this is. Just check some drawings to see what could be behind there. Seeing nothing special though.

I'm not sure exactly why it's been placed there.

Anyone else? No? Hmmm, it seems to me that this class is not very popular. Not even in England.

No. We built them here and then sold them all off!

Models of this class are quite rare, I've only seen models in pictures up until now.

My best guess with the position of the grill is that it permits access to the retractable forward hydroplane equipment.

Davy, yes you sold them. And I probably know why  ok2

However, that this sub has been build rarely is quiet good for us. The type 212A can be seen everywhere. But I don't understand why this type is not very popular. It's a real pretty boat with a lot of details. We don't look at the issues the Canadian has to solve.

Subculture: I'm not sure if you are right. For me it makes no sense to cover the hull with over 22,000 acoustic tiles and then accept a noisy grill. I'm pretty sure that this one is not very silent. We will rebuild this also in our model. For us, this will bring some advantages even it is placed in out dry-hull-section.

Best regards

Vanguard class has anechoic tiles and casing vent grilles.

OTW are the only company I know of producing this hull as a kit. Mention OTW to a lot of UK modellers and they'll agree they're lovely kits, but then you'll start hearing that curious sound of air flowing through teeth!

Thanks for this information. Checked my Vanguard pictures and saw the grills. Never take notice about those very big grills. Do you know what function they have?

I know OTW and his Upholder kit. Unfortunately it won't fit our needs as you might know already  ;)

AFAIK they're just there to allow air to escape through the free flood casing.

Very strange that one. I mean, those big grills will be very noisy if the sub is dived. I am wondering because they are so big. Never saw grills like this in other subs. Maybe someone can expose this secret.

The Russian subs have large grilles all over a lot of their boats e.g. Typhoon. Like the Russians our boats have a lot of freeboard, so perhaps that is a factor.
