Hi,
I am new to this forum and to building model tug boats. I am getting ready to paint my almost  complete model of the Aziz. Having read of the sinking of one of the builds, I thought some modifications to the kit plan were in order. I added a combing under the aft deck hatch to raise the hatch 1/4" above the deck. Hopefully that will be enough  height to keep water away from the hatch. If I need to add more height I  can retro fit another 1/4 inch. I also shortend the length of the aft most port and starboard scuppers and did not cut out the two gangway openings. Hopefully I will take on less water and any water that does cover the deck will not reach the actual hatch. I plan to secure that feature as well.

I plan on doing some towing and it is obvious that as found in the kit the bits are not designed for any meaningfull work. After searching the web for ideas about this issue and finding nothing I designed my own solution. I am including some pictures of what I did in hopes that my construct is of help to someone.

I can't say enough  good things about the Aziz kit. Model Slipways makes a terrific product and as soon as I complete Aziz I plan on building another kit from them.

Re hatches Neil (nhp651) posted up a good way/diagram to seal hatches.
If I can't find the post for you I'll ask him. Always nice to have an option.

You can reply here or you can send a personal message - a pm. To pm someone, click on their avatar, a page loads and you click on 'send member a personal message' then type your message and press send. You can then look in your outbox and you will see it there if sent. You also have my email address.

So you can pm or email but for the most part I would say posting here in the forum will get you more specialised help - the membership on Mayhem has a vast experience.
You have to feed them pictures though - they're all pixel addicts here

I thought as much. I think the problem is related to the fact I included an attachment with my  reply. When I sent the message to which you just replied it went thru fine and I was shown that it had posted. Must be something in my setup that is not allowing attachments. This time I will use the "add image to post" route instead of "additional options". I think that is the problem.

I want to thank you for being able to get me a copy of Neil's message. It was nice of him to take the trouble to sketch out his solution. Since I have already added 1/4" combing around the hatch opening I needed to revise his plan as it is based on the hatch being flush with the deck opening.
 
The attached crude sketch is my approach. I think it will work fine but do have a concern that if the tolerance between the combing and the hatch lip (styrene angle piece) is too tight, capillary action might draw water up and over the combing and into the hull. I plan to sand a slight gap between the two pieces to break any capillary action.
 
Suggestions and comments very welcome. They help me add to my building skills and make this hobby very enjoyable.

I can see you are trying to make it 100% dry and you are worrying about capillary action on your raised hatch. If you look for a moment at Neils flush hatch, then on the face of it that would be much more prone to seepage than is your raised one. Yet it doesn't happen because he uses a just little vaseline (see note on diagram). So vaseline is one option

If you stay with the plan for a gap to avoid seepage then you also need to plan to continuously maintain the gap all round because if the hatch moves about even a little, then on one side you will be right back to square one. The hatch isn't going to be standing in water though, so it all depends on how far you want to go.

ps you can attach stuff to pm's so I can't explain what is happening your end.

I missed the vaseline reference. I also think you are correct in that I am making more of the problem than I should. the combination of the combing and styrene angle and some vaseline ahould more than do the job.

On another subject, I have tried to post a topic with some attachments onto the modeltugforum site and have not been able to send the post. If you are familiar with that site can you direct me as to how to contact with a moderator so I can get some help?
