Arun upgrade from Lead Acid to Lipo's...
« on: March 12, 2012, 01:38:52 pm »

Current setup...

1/12 scale Arun Lifeboat
2x xyh4250-800kv-outrunner
2x seaking 60A speed controllers

They have been running on 12v lead acid which is fine for scale running speeds and adds sufficient ballast however.......when i first got a new set of lead acid 12v 10amp batteries it went like a rocket for about 5-10 Min's then back to scale speed for an hour or so, but now the batteries are 6 months old + i only get scale running,

The only explanation that i can come up with is that the esc's are going into the low voltage mode as they are designed for lipo's which i think means time to upgrade the powerplant.....

I have been looking on ebay and can see loads of these Chinese knock offs 11.1v for £25 each and then nearly £30 for the 14.8v

Can anyone suggest the size fuse i will need inline i currently have the car type spade fuse holder?

In line fuse. Perhaps use car audio awg fuse unit, ebay £5 each. Then just fit required fuse at correct rating.
Perhaps 40amp. you could possibly get from halfreuds.

Maybe swap out the lead acids for D cell nimh or F cell 12v 13ah, component shop.
Also re, speed controls check giant cod they list esc for marine application.

Consider buying your lipo's closer to home.

http://www.giantcod.co.uk/  These people are primarily aircraft and import from China but they do have a good reputation and excellent service.

Go for the cheap option and disable the low voltage cut off....

Another option well worth considering is using 12v stick packs i run mine on 24v....I know I am  a hooligan !!!!!!! and get well over an hour runn time, flat out it will do well over 40 mins before it will drop down to scale speed

I had a read through turnigy 1's, 80amp rating marine.
U can set them up without pro card just by position of tx sticks.
Also as russ suggested u can get 1's that do not have bec built in.

Hope this helps.

Update from Sundays sail.....

Turned off low voltage cutoff, made a big difference to performance and duration...full power ish for 20mins then dead.

I think that this has improved the running of the boat and i have also tested with Lipo's...

One of the guys at the lake kindly let me use a couple of his 3 cell lipos 11.1v and wow! the boat rises completly out the water skimming accross the lake, lipos are a must upgrade just need to get saving!

No the Honda 4 stroke pulls it along and the lipos just power the cooling fans ,pumps, lights and bling stuff.
I'm lucky because here at Sunny Stevenage IC boats are still OK on our lake.
