"Hand, Reef and Steer" - a book recommendation
« on: March 21, 2012, 05:41:37 pm »

Hello fellow Mayhemmers!

I recently bought a book and thought I'd be so bold as to recommend it to you. I'm putting it in this section as it's very much a sailing book.  It is:

Title: "Hand, Reef and Steer - traditional sailing skills for classic boats."
Author: Tom Cunliffe
Publisher: Adlard Coles Nautical, London
ISBN: 978-0-7136-7224-4
Amazon link: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hand-Reef-Steer-Traditional-Sailing/dp/0713672242/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332351639&sr=8-1

Basically, it gives loads of information on the workings of gaff rigged ships of all types. It explains what rigging goes where and why and how it's all put together.  I've found it fantastically enlightening about my Nobby build as I can now look at all the reference photos that I have and understand what everything is.

There you go. I've no connection with the book in any way other than having been thoroughly impressed by it.

Cheers!

Robert.

I can recommend it, it was invaluable when rigging my gaffer i also bagged a 1937 copy of the Manual of seamanship as recommended by Tom. Also on my reading list The gaff rig handbook by John Leather and Classic boat seamanship by Martin Tregoning.
