Multi boat 2.4set up
« on: March 25, 2012, 09:01:35 pm »

After recently rejoining the rc boating scene I am surprised at the progress in the electronics used in the hobby. Obviously i would like to go 2.4, but my old existing boat (see beginners sec) used 27meg. Before deciding i would like to get the old boat on the water again, so if any one has an old 27 meg tx lurking around for sale please let me know.
Back to the question of 2.4.
1 can i buy one tx and use numerous rx in other boats?
2 will a 2/3 channel be ok or should i go for more? would only want extra channel for water pump for water monitors on fireboat.
3 I have looked at cheap 4ch (£25) but will they enable me to use on multiple boats
4 would it be better to buy something like spektrum or futaba if its the only tx im going to have?
This along with speed controllers and motors are a mine field as i have to learn about them all to be able to make a decision on the best to use.
I am a little apprehensive about asking such basic questions and have looked through past posts, but nothing seems to cover what i want. I am a member of another non  hobby related forum and i can hear the comments "here we go again" I have already clocked up 14 hours of log in time in a couple of days . Must say i have enjoyed reading past posts and some of the tutorials, will get through them all one day!.
I am enjoying my return to the hobby, thanks for a great forum. :-)

All 2.4 Ghz sets that I know of allow you to bind  more than one receiver to the Tx - even the cheap ones. With some sets (Spektrum DX5e for example) all the Rxs have to be the same model.

I use the Radiolink four channel set from GiantCod and have about 5 models running on it. Some of them require different set-ups of the Servo reversing switches. If you have a computer set this is stored in the set up, but I just use a sticky label on the Tx to show the reverse switch arrangement for each model - simple and cheap :-)) :-))

Just realised this is not correct. Although I thought this was true when I had AR6100 and AR500 Receivers, I now have AR500's, Giantcod cheap Spektrum compatible and Orange Spektrum compatible ALL bound to the same DX5e Transmitter.

Just remember to switch of models not in use.... can be fun trying to control 2 models on one TX at the same time

Upside of 2.4GHz is that you can bind as many RXs to one TX as you want, and no crystals to bother about or buy.
Downside is that compatibility between makes and even brands within a make is at best uncertain.  A major maker might gather a good variety of perfectly good compatible RXs, some of the lower price ones might not.  There is just no telling what availability is going to be a few years down the line.  Admittedly, a few years down the line a complete new outfit might be cheaper than an RX to match your existing TX.

I run a Spektrum DX7se which is something I've had since its introduction.  I was using the Spektrum RXs until I found the Orange compatables.  They are brilliant and are about a £5.00 each.  The beauty with a computer set and the 7 in particular is the number of models that are stored within the TX.  You don't have to change anything, just select the model and away you go.  I have no knowledge of the others, other than the Radio Gear, which my Dad uses, seems to be OK but only has 6 model memory.
I was always told to buy the best TX you could afford, mas the chances are models will come and gfo but the TX will stay forever!
