Using Carbon Fibre in Contruction
« on: March 25, 2012, 09:44:00 pm »

Greetings to all,

I'm would like some guidance available around the use of carbon fibre as an alternative to wood/plywood during construction. Specifically, if you are told to use a certain width of plywood, but want to use carbon fibre, what is the equivalent width? Similarly, if one were to use dowel as a mast, but wanted to try a CF mast, how does one determine what should be used? I would have thought that there might be some standard equivalences, something along the lines of:
Ply is x mm thick. Use x/2 carbon sheet.
Dowel is y mm diameter. Use 3/4y carbon rod or use a tube y diameter but blah-de-blah wall thickness.

If anyone is wondering why I might want to do this, the answer is because it's different and might be fun!
