ABS adhesive / glue
« on: March 25, 2012, 10:09:37 pm »

Hello folks can you please share your opinions with me re the above?  gluing abs to abs in the main and I may need quit a bit.  I'm told Stabillit Express is very good but expensive, I've also heard that Uhu super acryllit is as good but much cheaper, and finally has anyone tried 'Bison' adhesive as sold by Cornwall model boats which appears even cheaper still?

                          Thanks and regards, Tony. :-))

For ABS to ABS I have always used "Plastic Weld", a brush on liquid that is made for the job.  The bottle I have here is from EMA Model Supplies, but is stocked by most model shops that stock Plastistruct ABS sections and sheets.

Liquid solvent cement Colin Tony.   {-)

This solvent sticks all normal model making plastics, i.e. perspex, ABS, butyrate, styrene, acrylic etc.
It has a long shelf life, is fast acting (grabs in seconds), and has a water-like consistency so it is best used by holding or clamping the surfaces together and running a loaded brush or applicator along the length of the joint (solvent will be drawn into the joint by capillary action). A second application can be made if required, but is not normally necessary.
When joining dissimilar plastics, i.e. styrene to butyrate, the hardest material (in this case butyrate) should have the joint surface softened, by giving a light coat of solvent, prior to holding the surfaces together. Then proceed as normal.
PlasWeld should be used in a well ventilated area and contact with skin or eyes should be avoided (wash well with water if this occurs).
This product is also available in a 57ml bottle (AM00001).

It doesn't half disappear quick when you knock it over on the bench.

No need to reach for a cloth.            :((

Where can you buy it by the bucket as my local Chemist shuffled his feet.   %)

Uhu "Hart"  (Balsa Cement), Ketone (MEK Not MEKP), Bulk tin - ABS/PVC pipe welding cement from Wikes Screwfix and plumbers supply shops. You can also get the thinners from there (MEK) too.

Hi Ian

I have a small tin of thick stuff with a built in brush for pipe joining but am frightened to use it. My reason being, I thought it was designed for thick tubes and would 'carry on' melting and glueing'  too long to be used on thin plastic sheet..    %)

Anybody coming to the Shepton Mallet show on Saturday  (this week) that could sell me a largish quantity of runny MEK please ?

Made that mistake once Ken, if you apply it a bit thick it does keep working and melts the ABS down

Plasweld similar to MEK.  http://www.modelshop.co.uk/product/Liquid_solvent_cement_500ml_AM00003

Everything in moderation - including moderation :}

This seems to be a place for a little 2012 aim of mine - to distinguish between ABS and styrene.
They are different! :}
They both exist and we come across them both but most of what we meet in boats is styrene, also known as polystyrene and HIPS.  ABS is a much improved plastic with an added flexible component (the "B" which is butadiene) and used for high quality and long-life things, including good-quality boats (probably).

The glue debate does not need really to distinguish between them, as the styrene bit of both is soluble in the same solvents
sorry about the rantlet

 I found pretty quickly in a younger life that if I drank even half a pint more than my normal, I fell over, soooooooooooooooooooooooo!  . . . . . . .

 Yes Ken, that's why I mentioned the thinners (MEK) from the same place, you can generate a mix to suit whatever application.

I will try Stavros's suggestion and use a small amount on block building, but need the capillary action for fine sheet work, so will get a tin of fluid.

Cheers

Hi Andrew - If you had both could you tell which sheet is which if they were unlabeled?

Andrew,

Would the liquid glue used for plastic model kits also work ???

Dave

Almost all the ABS sheets I have used seem to have a much smoother shinier finish than styrene, plus cut and drill better with less burring.
Polystyrene model cement will stick ABS, but the liquid plastiweld does it much better.  Almost instant set, capillaries into the joint, and without sticky stuff oozing out as the parts go together.
