OOOPS! (Deep discharged battery)
« on: April 06, 2007, 02:24:31 pm »

Just found Aziz switched on - been idle for a couple of weeks.......

Anyhow the battery voltage is 2.5V (12Ah 6V SLA) - I think I know the answer but I will ask it anyway: is it shagged or can it be recovered?

Hmmmm, now where could I go to get a new one?  :o  ;D

I shan't be buying a new battery for it, I will however be replacing the one for the model it was pinched from otherwise my puffer won't puff.........

Tried a trickle charge - my charger sits there and says "Shan't!!!!"  Half wondering about sticking it on at work but I think it is too far gone - PowerSonic define deep disharge as a battery voltage of 5V not 2.5V

Thats what I was thinking of! I have a small collection of dead SLAs just for that purpose - for instance Aziz uses a demised PowerSonic 12V 7Ah for its ballast. The battery was formerly used in a roadside telephone.

This will probably be used to help "Highlander" sit on the waterline.

I encountered a similar situation with a 12-Volt, 3-Amp SLA. It too had fallen below the minimum specified voltage. But after just two charge/discharge cycles the voltage came back to 12.6 Volts. It would appear that no permanent has been caused since the cell still holds its charge for approx. the same amount of time as previously.  I thought that once the voltage had discharged to the critical level, then that would be the end of it. So I'm assuming I got lucky because the battery is less than a year old and otherwise reasonably healthy.

For anyone interested, as Martin rightly suggested, I first trickle-charged the cell from a standard car battery charger. After approx. 15 hours the voltage across the cell terminals had risen to 10.3 Volts. It was then discharged through a 12-volt, 21-watt lamp until the terminals were reading 5.5 volts. This was followed by 2 hours of charging at a rate of 5 Amps, followed by a further three hours of trickle charge (0.3 Amp).
It's been working okay since, but it's too early to tell what the long-term effect might be.

Not little ones that I am aware of - plenty available 75ah upwards but a bit heavy for model use!

Word of help, I hope. When you post a reply using a quotation, start your message after the last [/quote]. What you have to say then appears outside the highlighted box and makes it easier to read. You'll soon get the hang of this!  ;)
