having another look it might steer if you wiggle the stick the left a bit of to right

pm sent
Like I said in post#8 "Propulsion was achieved by waggling the thumb, steering by ceasing to waggle with the thumb in the right place."
Just like on a real sculling boat, steering happens with the position of the oar when coasting.

Hi,

Steering is easier than you think when using a single oar. I was originally taught by a good friend in China.

Hi, Rickles

Thanks for showing the plan - this is indeed the Happy Harry I made a couple of years ago - steering and propulsion are pretty straightforward, and so is the servo linkage.

The layout of servo, wee man and his oar (scull) are closely related to the boat, but could be adapted to suit

Does the hull you have resemble the Happy harry hull - does it have a seat at the stern?

btw - I am an Engineer

For all who replied to my need for an Engineer:

I am in negotiations with Mad_Mike.

To andrewh,

I have a small light fibreglass hull which is easier to maintain as I sail in salt water. It has no seat as yet. I plan to leave the transom until I get the figure.

Hi,

An interesting parcel arrived today and after a few minutes I had my sculling figure. This was made by Mad_Mike, who I would like to thank for making it, and I quickly set it up to get a couple of photos.

All I need now is more weeks in my day to finish work on the boats I have underway as we have our annual model boat show in June.

Hi Mad_Mike,

It got here very fast, the Post Office really pulled their digit out on this parcel. I thought later this month or early May!

Do I like the figure?

It's brilliant

Done in the best traditions of Modellers everywhere. I have personally never met you except via this forum and some emails. You come up with the ideal solution.

By the way I sent my elder Sister a Care-Flight Bear by Post and it got sent back to me as they could not contact my Sister. After a couple of months and exchange of emails I sent it on its way again. It got there after traveling some 36.000 miles. The bear now has its own little passport made by the Care-Flight people.

ah good. im not sure how your going to get the seat level with the top of the boat like  {:-{ i made it to the plans but it seems that the boat is a little smaller. either his legs need repositioning so that stretched out or need cutting off at the ankle.

Im sure youl come up with something  :-))

Hi Mad_Mike,

I must admit I had a false floor in the boat to make the figure balance there as his arms were not glued in.

I have measured it the way its supposed to go and the figures seat is a half inch from the top at the stern, plenty of room for him and the servo.

The battery and other gear will be forward of the figure hidden under a tarp.

HI thought you might like to see a few pics of mine, uses a 12 inch jack, the treasure chest has an mp3 player and amp inside, playing pirate songs, the speaker resides under his coat.

more pics to follow when i don't get connection reset messages.

Hi hollowhornbear,

Looks good!

I started the hull today...soaking strips of wood in hot water ready for bending.

What is the angle for the oar?

it shouldnt make much difference as long as the oarblade is just under the water. The arc of the oar wont change what ever the angle the oar is at just the distance between the blade and the fulcrum. Adust the angle to what works for your boat, i think the angle that hollowbear has his oar will foul the corners of the boat on yours.

sorry forgot to say the figure is still loose jointed at the shoulders, so i can adjust the angle as necessary and bring ithe oar in to the position in the pic for transport.

Hi,
Finally got a few minutes to myself so onward to find this ex pirate a new home.

Stand made, I always do that first.

Wood strips steamed and pegged out to get the right shape.

Transom made from some veneer I was given. Truth be told it was a 6 x 4 feet sheet.

Seat measured and cut out and trial fitted.

Hi Mike,

You can see the gap now I have the figure in the right place.

With the oars I am trying carbon fibre, the same that I use as masts in the footy yachts.

They are fairly stiff and I have not broken one yet!

Hi all,

Just a bit of a problem uploading posts tonite.

I have had to move the figure to a better angle so that the servo now gives equal thrust(?) to both sides now and has inspired me to redesign the boat to simulate battle damage.

Anyone know where I can get a scale bird skeleton???
