Jon, just heard from my man...the Spearfish is on the way, depending on fast how the PO decide to operate, it should be here by Thursday. With a bit of luck and a following wind....

I had a Triumph! A 2.5 PI, P registered in dark green, with a set of fancy wheels on it.  I loved it, it was a real cracker of a car, built like a brick outhouse. The gearbox developed a fatal flaw internally which didn't do much for the rear axle....and so it had to go.

RIP, my 2.5PI
Anyone still looking for a Spearfish there's a s/h one on ebay at the moment, item number 130679472321  :-))

My Spearfish arrived today, so the slipway has been cleared ready. Couldn't resist opening the box, despite the decorating...

I've installed the propshaft and the rudder, watercooling inlet and outlet pipes are done, just waiting on the super new watercooled motor mount to arrive. Pics to follow tomorrow, but here's a couple showing the kit and the hull/deck.

Couple more pics, just working out what will go where...

The motor is just laid temporarily in position just so as I can check the C of G.

Any way you can get the motor a little bit further aft to shorten the unsupported shaft.
That coupling looks a bit suspect too.

Fear not Bob, the new motor mount will take care of that....

Once that's fitted properly I can then trip the shaft down a bit. There's also a internal support which goes under the shaft to support it...belt n' braces.

Rich

(oh, and I've got a proper coupling to go in as well....)

And if it is a true 550 (will take 12 volts) you can still have a mad moment connecting the batteries in series.

It's supposed to be a 600, Bob...I'm pretty sure that this is the motor I bought from Action for my MBD Biber sub last year (and never used)

The battery packs will be wired to give me 12v, so I think I'll have enough power without sacrificing run time...I hope.

Yes, chose the single shaft road, Jon...I thought things would be easier that way.

That was an interesting pic of that shell, wasn't it? If he'd have parked that down this way, it wouldn't have been there long!

I'll add some more pics later, I've all but completed the battery/radio tray installation, shaft/rudder are installed, and whilst waiting for the glue to dry I've made a start on a representation of a dashboard.

Richard
Our 555 motors don't have cast backplates like that one, and a 555 wouldn't be anywhere near enough powerful to get a 36" model up on the plane. If it's one of the cheapo Johnson motors which you can buy for next to nothing - and it sure does look like one (see 'Bad 540 motors' here http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/Common/Electrics/How%20Fast.htm#Fast%20motors) - then the ESC will last about half a second at full chat before it goes pop. Those things are all but lethal. You might get away with a P93 if you add much bigger heat-sinks to it (like P98) but in its standard form it's primarily for large sloggy motors which pull less than 10A continuous current..

I am now totally and utterly confused and confuddled.

The pic below shows three motors...the one in question, next to it a 380 for comparison, and a (supposedly) 550 as supplied by Hooben/Ark Model in their Perkasa kit. So which motor do I use?

I would go for the Hooben one first.
These are quite high performance motors so you could try it on 6 volts first.
If not fast enough go to 12 volts.

Simples!!

the one on the left with its torque rings , or one from our local shop in portsmouth ( fratton models ) they have a good 600 low drain motor for  under a tenner , which is what we have been using in both my modified sea rover and standard crash tender ,

Right...confused no longer. The decision has been taken...and the choice is...wait for it...

The Hooben/Ark Model 550 motor. Both battery packs are wired in series..or is it parallel..whatever, I have 12volt @ 3700a/h to play with. I've fitted a 35mm 2 blade plastic prop to start with, and I can go up to 40mm or down to 30mm, whichever seems best.

I have the ACTion Multi Controller installed at the minute, but I've also ordered a Tornado esc from Howes...£30 for 50amps worth.

Bob...Jon...Dave @ ACTion...I thank you all for your contributions. If anything goes bang or catches fire or melts, I hereby absolve you all of any blame.

My grateful thanks, gentlemen...
