Pitch Controller for Robbe Type VII
« on: March 01, 2012, 11:42:50 pm »

I'm fairly along with finishing my electronic components worked all the "Black Magic Glitches everything seems to be satisfactory the last thing I need to add is a Pitch Controller. A couple of questions do I really need a pitch controller  everything I've read says yes is that correct?

I've looked at the Engel,  Caswell and Microgyros.

Any recommendations and or positive or negative experiences would help a decision on my part

In the past everyone on this Forum has been extremely helpful for a first time submarine captain.

I have a controller on my "scratchbuilt" type II, but not on my robbe type VII.  it would be easier to run the type VII if it had one, but it isn't mandatory.  It originally had the engel model, but the engel failed after only one season.  I have neglected to buy a replacement, due to the fact that the robbe failed after the second season and has been sitting on a shelf since then.

to add fuel to the fire, i am using the following, which isn't in your list of pitch controllers you have looked at:

http://www.mikessubworks.com/subs_only.html

it works nicely, and is inexpensive to boot.

I recommend the microgyros. Rock solid, with some unique features, and the response is nicely damped, plus they're pretty easy to set up.

I expect Mike is in the process of updating his website, as it looks like he's removed the details about the Pro 2 leveller. The ones shown on the website do not represent the current state of the art.

He's been updating for a long time then...that page has been the same since I got my leveller for the Lafayette.

These were sold in the States for a while, but I don't think you can get them any more. I received one bundled in with a hull, and when I tested it out I found it is very twitchy indeed and the response didn't seem to be as smooth as other levellers I've tested. Not sure if this down to the software or the accelerometer used, perhaps I was just unlucky and got a duff one.

They're straightforward to set-up. You can run your boat without one, but are a lot easier to keep straight and level with one fitted.
