Tips for Preventing Burglary

Thought this was worth a review...

Tips for Preventing Burglary

Burglary is for the most part an opportunistic crime and there is a good deal that can be done to prevent easy pickings. Burglars are looking for a home that gives them the easiest method of committing their crime undetected. Two out of ten burglars do not need to use any force to gain entry and three out of ten get in to the property through a rear window.

You can avoid making the burglars entry an easy one with steps as follows;

    Invest in good locks with specific attention to patio doors together with window locks to accessible windows.
    Growing prickly shrubs underneath windows.
    Erecting a high gate across any side passage way on the property.
    Ensuring side gates are padlocked.
    Ensure that all ground floor windows are closed when the occupants are out or asleep.
    Keep any ladders out of sight and preferably padlocked preventing use to gain access to inaccessible windows.
    Lock away garden tools and other implements which could be used to break a window.
    Keep hedges at a reasonable height so that burglars can be seen from the road.
    Do not leave a spare key about the premises outside, burglars know all the hiding places.
    Do not leave keys near the front door within easy reach of the letter box.
    Security lighting is considered a deterrent.
    Make sure that there are no valuables specifically on show.
    Any empty boxes advertising that expensive equipment has recently been purchased should not be exhibited by the waste bin.
    It is imperative that the home appears to be lived in;
    Avoid any post piling up by asking a trusted friend or neighbour to remove it.
    Cancel any milk deliveries and news papers.
    Leave lights on a timer switch and ask someone to close the curtains at night and open them in the morning.
    Leave a radio on a timer switch which will give the indication that the house is occupied.
    Ask a neighbour to park on the drive.
    Disconnect any answering machine.
    Take photographs of valuable jewellery items beside a ruler to indicate its size.

Finally if the property is protected by a burglar alarm it is imperative that it is activated every time the property is vacated.

There are certain groups who might be targeted where additional precautions are suggested. i.e.: Students, Senior citizens and those moving house;

Students

    Be aware who is let in to student accommodation or who is following you into the building.
    Even if just quickly visiting a friend's room or kitchen, lock ones own room door.
    Mark valuables with ultra violet ink with the university and student I.D.

Senior citizens

    Be aware of the smart dressed caller purporting to be from the local authority's gas, electric and water companies. Look carefully at any I.D. cards. Many companies such as the gas and electric companies have the facility of a prearranged password system.
    Provide a spy hole in the front door and keep a security chain on when talking at the door.
    Never employ a builder who just turns up at the door suggesting that there are repairs needed to the property.

Moving home

    Ensure the estate agent is discreet with the details they give out.
    Resist viewing without appointments.
    If a key is left with an estate agent ensure it is returned.
    If there is any previous history of theft on your new property the locks should be changed.
    Small items of valuables such as jewellery should be taken to the bank on the day of removal.

Adding a microchip to your most valuable items (including scale model boats) will enable you to prove ownership plus a "finder" can locate the owner on the online database. It's similar to the way pets are id chipped and registered. A window sticker informs the thief that items have been id chipped and that is a deterrent in itself likely to make the thief think twice. It costs less than £20 to id chip any item.

hehehehe

for my security system we have three dogs 2 small 1 big the big one provides visual and sound deterant , the little ones are like radar scanners if there in the dining room and some one makes a sound they pick it up   they have larger barks than thhe big dog meaning burglars think there is 3 big dogs , still  my bike got stolen but the dogs barked like mad that night and we thought it was just a cat

we also have a big thick wooden gate you can kick the gate realy hard and it wont brake but over the top of the gate we put a previously rotted slab of wood going across so if a robber tries to climb over and puts any wait on it it  will snap and he will either have verypainfull bits    and or splinters  also i made a fake vid cam   wich looks reilistic

ssssssshhhhhhhhh, Tia is a big softie, even softer that our previous Labradors as long as a family member is there.
When we first got her the window cleaner didn't like her at all.
She has free rein of the house when we are not in.
She just sat and watched the window cleaner clean the windows.
She followed him room to room and just sat quietly watching him.
His comment was "It was as though she was just saying, come in if you dare!"
It would be worse if someone came in from the garden, she has lots of bits of food buried there and will guard that.

If you have a gate at the side of the house, tie some string or fishing line to the bottom. At the other end of the line tie it to the neck of a milk bottle or a couple of tins (you will need to drill small holes to tie the string through). Hide the bottles/tins out of sight behind the gate post. If anyone opens the gate, the bottles/tins will make a loud noise - the unwanted visitors will flee - never fails.

Just another low cost addition to house security.

My garage door (roller type) has a high-pitched squeal when it is moved up the runners so if a would-be thief managed to defeat the locks the noise would still alert the dog or ourselves. The noise might annoy the neighbours but there's no way those door runners will ever get oiled or greased !

Another cheap defence is some old carpet grips along the tops of the perimeter walls - I've been told they're illegal but they're staying put  <*<

One other preventive measure - store the "wheelie bins" well out of sight and if you're going away ask a trusted neighbour to put them out on collection day and bring them in on completion. This gives another indication that the property is "occupied"

Regards,

Ray.

What a world we live in..............

Good advice but it is such a shame that we should have to go to these lengths to protect ourselves.

One good tip I was given by a local Community Warden is that before answering to front door make sure the back door is locked.  Apparently it is a common trick for a smartish looking cold caller to get you chatting at the front door whilst his accomplice comes in the back.  Several people have been duped in this way.  A sad world.

BTW:  Carpet grips on walls and edges of flat roofs are illegal, but if you 'happen' to break some glass in those areas provided you have a visible notice about the breakage you may get away with it.

Tips for preventing burglary part 2

Live on a miliatary camp where you have an armed guard, and surrounded by razor wire fences.  Also you then know if something goes missing you only need to check several thousand men who are described as a man with short hair wearing a blue uniform!!!  :}

We could of course have an effective judicial system where people who commit burglary are punished?  Radical I know but just a thought.

they managed to get in while we were walking the dog
only to find my pc weighs ALOT ( i struggle to lift it ) and is cabled to the desk with an old bike lock
needless to say when we got back he took off like a whippet with a backside full of dynamite and to be fair just about beat the dog to the garages
dog got a mouthfull of leg
the guy was arrested when he checked into hospital after we had talked to the police  :police:

We had someone take a look in once, needless to say with this old monster around he wasn't looking in for long...

Dogs will always be the best form of home defence.

A gorgeous dog there Dicky...

These days, I've got this thing on guard. He's a little less intimidating at the moment

It would seem that an effective deterrent may be having a dog.

My neighbour, retired Policeman, found a dropped note, near his property on which all the houses in our little area, 4 streets, were marked that had dogs, mine included.

Some of those homes without dogs, have since been burgled, even though neighbourhood watch is active in our area.  >>:-( <*<
