does any one have any tips advice for looking after my 7.2v batteries   as they dont seem to live longer than 2 years

Treat them gentle, they only have so many charge/discharge cycles in them.  Fast charging and discharging cuts that number down - they are sealed devices, that means that when they get hot they will lose some of the fluid that they need.  Once its gone, its gone.  Of course, some are better than others.

the biggest killer of perfectly good 7.2 packs is trying to charge them while they were still hot from use, let them cool first or if youre impatient put them in a ziplock bag and dunk them in the pond, brand is important, I use to sell nicads and nimhs and cheapies are not worth the money, also make sure youre charger has a good charge/discharge cycle.

thanks guys will start using slow chargers as i only realy use quick charger and the batterys get very hot
