good film but why did he put a couple of table tennis bats  :: over the engine inlets to start the motors

Restrict air getting in, richen up the fuel mix so the motors start easier.

Remember them?
All cars had them when we were young
and carburettors delivered cheap fuel
Now it is injected and darn expensive

Yes I remember them on cars very well. Some the choke had to be all out on start up,
 then shoved back in again to a position which differed in every car.
get it wrong and the things either cut out or flooded.

 thanks to all who answerd still say the old cars were cheaper to run my mates car s engine manergent went wrong i think buy another car cheaper

If you enjoyed "The Sea Shall Not Have Them" watch out for another  ASR picture called  "For Those In Peril" I think it's the better movie
