How much room in your car boot?
« on: April 14, 2012, 02:44:18 pm »

I am soon to scrap my old faithful Ford Mondeo estate, rust, poetic justice really! Am looking for internal dimensions of a replacement, am finding cubic capacity in Litres. As I am not planning on using this vehicle as a milk float this is of no use to me. Can it fit a 67" Type VII U-Boat straight in? These are the questions rarely addressed on specialist sites!
So, we all build boats and loads of us use our cars to transport the models to the pond. Maybe it is time to start recording these vital dimensions for fellow modellers out there.
I will start;
Ford Mondeo Estate ( Old shape, pre 2000) Seats folded ( the only important dimension!) 73" length, 44" across the wheel arches            ( narrowest point ).
Ford Focus Estate 04 plate, seats folded, 68" length 44" across wheel arches.
Who has a Vauxhall Zafira ( older or newer model ) and a tape measure?

Get yourself a HONDA CRV

I can get two tugs, Tito Neri and Parat along with the trolley a transmitter case spare SLA 12 volt batteries and a folding chair into mine and still get to drive around in very sumptuous comfort

best one on my opinion is a Dacia Logan, not to sure if its available in the UK yet..??

seats folded there is 1.5m length and 1.m width (between the wheels) available in the boot...

i get my normal Regatta stuff (Gazebo, chairs, table, 2 boats and 2 hard metal cases) in the boot with out folding down the seats, yes i have one of these type of cars.... and i have done close on 180000km since i have had it.

http://www.dacia.co.uk/ shows only the duster

http://www.dacia.de/dacia_logan_mcv_kombi.php shows the Logan Asstate

Dont bother with a Reno Grand Scenic
76 by 45 but you have to remove one
or more seats completely

Forget the Zafira, they're an Astra and not a lot of length in the boot.

I'm looking at a C5 Estate off a guy at work - they're bloody huge O0, he can lay straight out in the boot when the rear seats are folded down with space to spare :-))

A friend of mine went to a car dealer to buy a new car (secondhand). After looking round a "salesman" came up to him and asked if he would like a test drive. No says my friend, but do you have a tape measure? Salesman produces tape measure and is asked to fold down the seats. Friend wields tape measure and says "I'll have this one". Salesman cannot believe he doesn't want a test drive {-) %% {-)

By the way, the car was an Audi Estate - not sure which model - but it took a 1 metre yacht  fully rigged plus other models.

My friend actually took his destroyer round the the car dealerships and test fit it to each one before he made a purchase.

I knew what I wanted, but and compared all online for price, space and options, and finally got it down to the Toyota Matrix.
Then I called around to six car dealerships asking for color and options. By the end of the day I had four salesman, calling back over
the purchase and price. Two had the car on the lot, and one wouldn't deal at all. My biggest complaint the car has features I "don't want".
The salesman that won dropped the price $4000  :-)

I've just been to measure the Superb. To mix scales, it's a good 6' long, by 1m wide at the arches and there's 80cm between the floor and top of the tail gate arch.

That's the marblehead in there.

Whereas when I go out for a little sunshine, my minders just ensure that there are enough cars to carry the models...

My S Reg Hyundai Lantra may be a large car, but the seats don't fold down and the boot is a separate compartment.  Maximum size for a scale ship is 1.45 m on the back seat.

My wife has a Vauxhall Zafira.  I did ask her if I could borrow it for sailings days just so I could build bigger boats.  You know that when you get that certain raised eyebrows look that you are entering a minefield.  I have not brought the subject up again.   %)

New Zafira with rear seats down 45"x 36" long

with rear and middle seats down 45"x 60" long

Dicky,

That's about the same as ours, (on a 54 plate), but the problem with ours is that the middle seats don't lie flat when folded and the 60" is the length on the floor.  I tried putting a 60" fish-tank in ours, but because of the seats sloping back and the rear door sloping fwd, I could only just fit a 48" long 18" tall tank in.

Sorry didnt realize he wanted to carry fish tanks.

Can get all my boats in mine with middle seats in position, not all at once, plus collapsible table and wheel chair.

Sorry didnt realize he wanted to carry fish tanks.

I don't think he does :}  I was just using it as an example of how much space you can lose as your height requirement goes up.

He wants to put a 67" long u-boat in it :-))

Not being morbid but a lot of funeral directors use Citroen c5s for 'removals'. They have loads of room in the back.

I did not say this Parat !
I did have both Tito and "Venture" in the back of the CR-V which is how I know they both fit along with the other stuff needed for a jolly fine day out

NB: this Parat is due to get her bottom wet Sunday just to see how it sits with the revamped battery position ( I may even take a picture or two)
