Mtronics digisound unit
« on: April 15, 2012, 09:34:10 pm »

Does anyone know if the new Mtronics digisound units are o/k to run off a 12v  12ahr PB battery
the reason being one on a friends boat starts ok and runs for a few minutes before it seems to
over heat and can hardly be heard. left to cool down it repeats as above.
I know these batteries are capable of giving out up-to 14v after a charge
Is that too much for these units to handle.
Some traders say not to be used with PBs Mtronics don,t state this.
Not as I can see anyway.

Mtronics say "The digiSOUND sound module for model boats will operate between 6.0 and 12.0V" so if you are over the 12volts this will not be good.

Yes that is the trouble with lead acid batteries Richard but on some Action products Dave states ( not to be used with lead acid batteries ).
So why can,t Mtronics do the same with their products if that is an issue. There are a lot of people who still use lead acid batteries in their boats and if that could cause problems with the the Digisound unit they aught to say, Not to be used with 12v PB batteries.

I dont think it is the type of battery that is the problem, more the voltage.

Has your mate tried a lower voltage battery to see if it works ?

Having just spoken to Mtronicks  they tell me these units should be fine on 12 volts. They suggest that any body having any problems should make contact with them. I must say that I have never had any problems with after sales service from this company and any issues have been dealt with very quickly.

How about using a BEC unit that will input upto 30 volts but will only give out 12 volts. Try www.huntersystems.co.uk who have them in stock right now.

Been in touch with the technical staff at Mtronics they say the 12v is the nominal voltage and the units should be o/k
on 13.5v etc. The sound units have their own amp which when used at the top end voltage will cause the unit to get
quite warm, but it should not shut down on that voltage.
They said my friend could send it back and if found faulty would receive a new unit.
Can,t be fairer than that.

Thanks for the help again guys,

Hi Richard, it runs quite happily on a 6v lead acid. but you get a reduced sound output.
