Latest Shannon prototype on it's SupaCat carriage

The new Shannon has started carriage trials, I think this is the first photo we have seen of the trials.

why did they "re invent the wheel" with the tracter unit Kinmel..............

I was talking to the tracter driver for Dungeness Lifeboat a couple of weeks ago and he was one of the ones testing the new one when she did trials down there for the first time................

he told me that the tracter and trailer are one unit........(not seperable unlike the Talus and trailer for the Mersey)............ and was a real pig to operate..............

Not at all user friendly.

Dad and I saw the Supacat tractor/trailer up close with the old FCB2 at Poole last year. The things they can do with it are very impressive!

The section of the trailer that the boat sits on can be slid forwards and backwards, presumably to make it more stable in transit and easier to launch. The boat can also be spun 360 degrees while still on the trailer, so it can be launched facing out to sea and recovered facing back into shore.

The tractor is built to be completely watertight; the engine casing is almost like a submarine's pressure hull. I think we we told it had more power than the Talus, plus greater visibility. They have to be kept together because the tractor's engine also powers the tracks of the trailer, so essentially it's one vehicle. Add all the hydraulic and electrical connections and it's easier to keep them together.

(and personally I think it looks pretty impressive as well!  :-)) )

Don't think so. We at Chatham are just waiting for the news that she's there so we can go and have a nose around  :-)

 Hi Tazie,
please do post your photos, anything on the Shannon seems to be few and far between.I haven't seen fcb2 as yet,but saw fcb1 when she trialed at St.Ives, who will be one of the first stations to have her.Not sure how they will handle the new trailer though,as it is pretty narrowly confined at the station I shall be exhibiting my model Lifeboats there on September 15th,which includes 3 models of St.Ives Lifeboats, past and present.

They seem to be "hiding" the Shannon as it is not moored at the RNLI in Poole but in one of the Yacht clubs near the docks as I went on a boat trip today and saw her "hiding" away from prying eyes.
