Raspberry Pi
« on: April 21, 2012, 05:22:50 pm »

been following the development of the Raspberry Pi for some time and now that they are finally starting to be shipped I was thinking of applications that it could be used for in a model boat.http://www.raspberrypi.org/

Because it has a bank of I/O connections I was thinking of using one a as a sound system as it already has the audio out which would only need a small amp to connect to the speakers and a bit of electronics to connect the the output from the receiver to give get proportional control to one or two of the input connections with a bit of programming you could have a fully working sound system for about £50.

Anyone else looked at this and thought of an application in a model boat?

I've got my name on the list for one.....still waiting.

I'm sure there are many, many applications. I've already got plans to use a micro-controller to operate my sail winches. I think something like the Pi could run a very sophisticated system indeed. Monitoring lots of things and adjusting others.  I'd think the sub boys and the steam heads would find them very useful.

I've been half following the product - what a great idea!

What applications have people used it for so far?

There are lots of plans a foot in the model railway sector, including route sensing, control and automation

I see lots of Arduino projects on Instructables.com - is the Pi going to be that much different?

Probably about twice the capability at half the price, in common with the trend in modern electronics.  It seems to have a USB connection, and its usefulness probably depends on just how cheap and easy its connections to the rest of the world are.
On a large model, it will probably open the door to getting lots more working features.  As the blurb says, the limit is the users imagination.  It neglects to mention the users ability as a programmer, something that not all have.

I think the fact that it has full I/O capability will be great. You can plug a keyboard and monitor into and work on it directly rather than having to blow chips.  I'm getting quite excited at the thought of my boats having such connections hidden about them!  O0

I hope it finally goes some way to actually giving us a useful 'micro computer' that Raymond Baxer and 'Tomorrows World' promised me decades ago!

NB. Where my flying car and jet pack?!?!  >:-o

It also neglects to mention thicko's like me who have never heard of a Raspberry Pi, and only use
the on/off buttons on DVD remote controls. Can anyone direct me to the 21st Century please.

I too am very interested in the Pi and its applications for model boating.

I'm no programmer, not even close but lets not forget, this is an education tool for children and therefore anyone should be able to construct simple commands etc..

Looking forward to seeing what people manage to achieve with these things.

Let us hope that a lot of programmers will put their code out as Open Source, so that we can all benefit and do not have to re-invent the wheel....

I think im going to get one. Lets face it, its not the most expensive gadget in the world and I know a very clever programmer who would be able to help me with any project if i so wish.

If only it were as easy as simply "getting one". I've been on the waiting list since day one.....and I'm still waiting.

This all sounds like the good old days of trying to programme on the BBC and Acorn Electron Computers !!

My Dad bought us a ZX81 when I was 10. Now that was real programming! Half an hour of typing it in only to find that it didn't work.
Of course, you could upgrade to using a cassette recorder.  Ten minutes of squealing and migraine inducing patterns and then it didn't work.  {-)
However, it did turn me into a professional computer programmer....

....which turned me into a clinical depressive...ah.

Perhaps I shouldn't order one.  {-)

I thought I was computer savey but I just don't get this raspberry of old London town oops I mean Pi..

For arguments sake is this something you could say programme and control a speed controller and Rudder output and so effectively programme your days sayling on the pond , leave it to run and go and have a coffee and chat while it sails around the lake on its own ?

I cut my teeth on a Spectrum, especially when the cassette O/S load failed just before the end(!) Had a lot of fun with it and taught myself programming which came in very useful workwise in later years. It's still in the loft somewhere with the Microdrives and maybe the thermal printer. Happy days. I even sold a couple of games to MAP at the time.
