Sad Scrap Yard Story
« on: April 24, 2012, 11:44:27 am »

Over many years I have powered all sorts of models with car blower motors - & possibly now radiator cooling fan motors - which I have got from my local scrapyard. This has always involved going a having a look around for suitable motors in good condition and a negotiated price of a couple of pounds.

I went to the local car breakers yesterday & was not even allowed into the yard - health & safety. This meant that I had to tell them what I wanted them to take the motor from - even though until I looked I didn't know - and as they were going to remove it for me the price was £25 & it could be in any condition!!!

I can buy a new one for £25 on ebay.

So much for recycling. Just another example of throw away.

Has anyone had better luck with brushed motors at car breakers recently?

I bought two beautiful motors on ebay the other day for £40.00 inc p and p...........unfortunately I didn't read the b**** advert properly and what I thought was the measurements in centimeters was in fact inches, so I have two rather large 12/24v motors that won't fit into my lifeboats with any chance at all..................stunning motors with bases and about a 5mm shaft.......if anyone is interested I'll put them onto the 4 sale thread.....they would be ideal for big tug towing.....will take what I paid for the pair for them.

I seem to remember it cost NASA rather more than Neil's £40 when someone forget to check which measurement system the drawings used ;)

nah, probably just realized it's silly to let someone pop in and make off with a '25-pound sterling' motor for a couple of pounds.

not that the motors are actually worth that, but that's what the going rate is on eBay it seems so why let anyone have them for less?

i imagine the biggest problem is public liability insurance , for members of the public working within the  yard , any vehicle balenced on the roof of another can be unstable , not to mention the fork lift truck or crane being used by staff . thse yards can often be a dangerous place to be ! before anybody complains ive had many years of experience , ive worked for four different breakers yards , as the collection / deliver truck driver . jon

It does look like we have lost yet another part of our ability to think and adapt.
A few years ago we were expected to have some awareness of our surroundings and a sense of self preservation.  The coming norm seems to be that everybody else must look out for the mindless morons wandering aimlessly with their eyes on a small screen and their thumbs welded to the touchpad and the sounds of the rest of the world drowned by whatever is coming through their earbuds, and help preserve them.
Scrapyards used to be a valuable source of generic motors at a sensible price - it seems that today, before you can think of getting a generic motor you have to know the make, model and year of the car that that it would have come from, thus preventing any browsing and experimenting.   So much for the scrapyard challenge type of program - I begin to suspect that far from any actual inventiveness and luck, there is a strong undercurrent of pre-design and planting of items from a recipe list to be "found".  Or am I just a grumpy git?

Have a look at this site    http://www.distel.co.uk/home.htm     for D.C. motors, sometimes cheaper than
flea bay and the delivery is excellent.

I am aware of Distel although my security software doesn't like the site. I have searched the site but can't find their carriage charges. Any ideas.

PS I purchased half a dozen of the black can Smiths heater motors from Bull Elecrical many years ago but I have now run out. I am sure that mine had a much higher stall curent than the 3 amps that they list however.
