People are entitled to their firmly held beliefs, which no 'proofs' will ever sway.  Interesting thread on technical reasons for the false impression of curvature to horizon, from camera lens distortion to the 'fact' we are actually looking down on a flat circle.

Nor sure why this is posted under Humour.  Even this forum has firmly held beliefs, from the conviction that Platicote satin interior varnish reacts aggressively with acrylic sprayed hulls, to the pogrom being waged (unfairly IMHO) against certain kit manufacturers ,and Titanic conspiracy theories.

Everyone is entitled to their beliefs.

Good one Colin.   That was intended as a comment on passive beliefs such as the Flat Earth Society, which should at least be respected if not agreed with, not an invitation for those who dislike certain kit manufacturers to blow up examples of their models at boat shows.

The only reason I post this in humor is I don't know where else to post it and, well I do believe (firmly) that it is bit humorous {-)

A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the center of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy. At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: "What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise." The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, "What is the tortoise standing on?" "You're very clever, young man, very clever," said the old lady. "But it's turtles all the way down!"

Well I do know that very quickly something could be said that someone is offended, but this was not my intention.
I posted this more like one of interesting facts of what people believe than anyting else.
Because if we start discusions on faith and religions, then God help us (if you believe in her existence) ;)

Everyone is entitled to their beliefs.

In philosophical terms that particular statement may be given the reply ... " Whether one has a particular entitlement or right is irrelevant to whether one's assertion is true or false. To assert the existence of the right is a failure to assert any justification for the opinion. "
