Build Log - Precedent Huntsman.. What Have I done?
« on: April 27, 2012, 08:15:00 am »

Are you sitting comfortably then we shall begin...

Purchased (or stole considering the price) a 36" Fibreglass Huntsman kit on Ebay a few weeks back. It cost me almost as much to post to Finland as it did to buy it but even so it was still less than half the price of a new one :).
While waiting for delivery I browsed the usual suspects looking for motors etc

And ended up with this lot

what we have in the picture is:-
200amp watercooled brushless speed controller.  Overkill? maybe but it is popular knowledge that Chinese Amps are smaller than European
2x 2650MAH 6S lipos 22.2V 35C Lipo Packs. These will be used together to give 22.2V 5300Mah
Motor C4240 Brushless outrunner 1020KV 660W 9T motor with watercooled mount
12" M4 Propshaft and 3 off 2 bladed Props 35, 40 and 45mm

Box arrived and all was well the plywood was in suprisingly good condition with just a little warping. An hour in the sauna and a night under a couple of tractor batteries and the sheets were straight again.

Less however can be said for the hull :(

The hull has a decided bow in the side. you can see it easily when looking at the hull but its cot so visible in the pictures.

And there are a couple of moulding flaws

Will i be ok to just sand these back and fill? I plan to paint the hull anyway as the white has yellowed a little with age.

I have built the internal bulkhead frames and stringers ready for fitting to the hull but for some reason forgot to take pictures  :embarrassed:
Tonight I plan to warm the hull and try to get the frames inside and maybe fit the propshat rudder tube and water cooling pickup.  (I think this will be one of the times when knowing naughty words in more than one language will be a bonus)

Another daft question springs to mind as I write
This is the watercooling pickup I plan to use

I just want to confirm this needs to be fitted between the rudder and the prop and offest to one side.  My question is what side and how far?

More pics land updates later :)

water pick up needs to be in direct line of wash from prop , slightly off set from the centre of shaft .

I'm going to enjoy this thread
Lot's of detail please as I have a full £30 invested in an old Precedent Huntsman.
Currently mine's residing in the shed in a very sorry state.

dave , it would look much better after a good clean ! are you fitting out as electric , or keeping it glow powered ? depending on which airscoops you require ,im able to make the classic polished ones in alloy which i then polish ! the pulpit on yours looks quite good in the photo .

Well I managed to get the frames into the fibreglass hull took a lot of heating up... ended up using a hot air paint strippper on low setting as the wifes hairdryer couldn't put enough heat in.
Next job is to get the propshaft, rudder and water scoop fitted

Hopefully getting my CNC machined window frames back today

Considering skinning the cabin front and sides in mahogony veneer and planking the decks with walnut.... what do you guys think?

Waiting on My P bracket to arrive before I can get anything else done... I want to get the prop fitted before fitting the deck.  This has raised a question:-

Do I Glue/Solder the propshat tube into the P bracket or just leave it loose?

I would glue it or solder it! Otherwise unless it is a micron fit you will still get vibrations.

I soldered mine in

Just read this and I have a Huntsman 48ins and have an outrunner in it 900v/volt running on stickpacks 18v I can safely say it will be OVERKILL on 22v as it will be reving to 22000 rpm I am on 16000 rpm on a 50mm 2 blade prop and she is Ballistic.I personally think you will flip her over on the turn, ask Dave at ACTion who actually designed the hull for this model for his advise if I wias you

I had realised this and have since ordered a couple more brushless motors:-

C4260 500Kv 1375W and a C4250 800Kv 1255W

Along with a selection of props and the Castle Creations ESC Ive borrowed from one of my helis (has data logging) I should be able to get a nice balance

Well the motor is in, propshaft fitted, rudder, radio box etc etc.
I meant to take pictures but I forget.... "I'll just do this bit then take some pics" and then I start the next bit  :embarrassed:

I will put some pics up tonight tho before I start fitting the deck ply.
I have decided to go with lime and mahogany planking.

Managed to find some "Interesting" 1:12 figures to add to the deck.  More details on these later.

Also before fitting the deck should I varnish the wood frames inside the hull?

I have been progressing slowly but surely

Shes been tested in the pool and works well.  I had issues getting the watercooling to work effectively, so I intsalled a windscreen washer pump into the cooling circuit, running on 4.8V it gives a good flow.
I started building the supersctructure and discovered a monumental cockup in my electric layout :( ... I put the battery packs and ESC right where the lowest part of the deck goes  :embarrassed: So I have to remove the battery trays and relocate further forward :(

How is this build going? Waiting in anticipation for details on the 'interesting' 1:12 figures! I would love to build one of these someday, but maybe I should finish my S100 schnellboot conversion and yachts first!!

3 kids, a wooden house and plumbing from the dark ages means that slightly more important things have been taking up my time :(

I'm hoping to have a few hours to spend on her in the next week or so.

So far I have the electrics fitted and tested including a water pump for the cooling system which runs from its own esc.  This runs from its own 3 postion switch on the TX... off, 40%(Gives a nice scale flow) and 80%(Full power gives far to much flow and looks silly)
I need to mess with the soft start settings on the esc as the motor "kicks" on start up enough to put the hull almost vertical  :o

As for the figures I have made a start.... I opened the packaging and decided on colours

A major issue I am having tho is the wood.... the kit was a "steal" on ebay but some of the sheet ply has warped quite badly so I may need to copy the parts and recut them in fresh ply.

Anyone know where you can get P brackets made to order in the UK besides G Sitek?
Know its a fairly simple manufacturing job for a basic one, but don't have any metalwork facilities.
Don't have the dimensions to hand but think its about a 6mmOD shaft.

Thanks

I have started on the lift out cabin assembly and relocated the ESC and batteries again.
Water cooling pump has been fitted and now runs via a 3 position switch on the tx off 30% and 70%.  The esc and seperate 2 cell lipo for this now provides the receiver power

Sadly now the interior looks a mess and after seeing some of the masterpieces on here I'm loathed to post up pictures  :embarrassed:
Hoping to get it on the lake for some more testing at the weekend and maybe a few vids.... she has enough power to put herself vertical if I turn the soft start off the ESC even with the batteries almost at the bow.  Problem with that battery location was the boat sat nose down when static in the water and looked wrong.  The batteries have been relocated and the ESC reprogrammed so the problem is still there but careful use of the throttle is required

Problem is I'm trying to juggle too many projects right now :( I really should concentrate on one model at a time.

Today I did a bit more on the huntsman.  The hull has been rubbed down, primed and is now awaiting topcoat

After an hour sodding about trying to get the waterline right so I could spray the blue on the bottom half of the hull, I took 10 mins to brows the net and decided its easier to just go for a one colour hull (all white) better to have a good one colour finish than a wonky looking waterline.
I have deviated from the instructions where it mentions leaving a lip on deck ply... I sanded mine flush and will ad a half round section around the top edge once planking is complete

I have built the superstructure and this has just received its first coat of primer.... to be honest it looks awful, going to sand it and fill it then prime it again.

Off to do more sanding......
