Bow sprit and grating 1840 Brig o War.
« on: April 27, 2012, 10:20:38 am »

I am building a 12 Gun Brig o War 1840 scale 1-48  can anyone tell me how the rope gammon lashings are fixed below the bow sprit and what they are lashed to.    i.e above the cutwater, and  any details of the grating as to the shape and how to make it, also how to attach it to the ship :(( The Drawings are by Harold Underhill but there are not enough details to enable me to see how these things are attached.

There's a hole in the stem for it to pass through.

A rough sketch of bow spirit gammoning  Historically the ends of the gammoning were nailed to the bowsprit with large headed hails
There was no standard methard of securing the head gratings on smaller ships they secured to spares nailed to and between the head rails most lye they were lashed to the spars so they could be easily removed for cleaning (Remember these were the heads (toilets) for the crew

hope this helps

Jimmy in your library of rigging books whats the general consensus for the peak halyard i have a couple of books each give a different method i have gone for what i hope is the best which is

Halyard fixed to mast then out to gaff span block up to a head mast block then down to the thole pins

The other method is up to a mast head block down to gaff span back to mast and fixed

I have rigged the first method but would like to know if there's a preference i may change it if necessary but only when i check the mast in a couple of years time.
