LOCATIONS IN YOUR PROFILES
« on: April 29, 2012, 04:55:07 pm »

                               As the title says ...............................

Can you ALL please put your locations into your profiles.

The advantages will be apparent when it comes to getting in touch with fellow Mayhemers. It also helps with judging how far away you are when it comes to sending or collecting Boats and bits. You could also be invited to join local boat clubs near to you, or maybe get help from your nearest enthusiast.

The advantages go on and on.

Just click on your name and go to your profile page where it's quite easy to enter your nearest town. We don't need to know streets or any personnel details so your world will not be disturbed.

                      Thank you for your co-operation

Hi Ken,

Due to reasons I'm not prepared to go into, sorry, but no I wont put my location in my profile, and if it becomes a requirement to do so then I'll be leaving.

As this is an interweb forum, I don't see the point of needing to know where everyone else lives and why they need to know where I live.

If there's any reason that I need to inform another member where I live, (for sales/purchasing or any other reason), I'll tell them at that point via PM and it will most likely be my work address :-))

Mark in your case you must have reasons not to disclose your location fair enough. As an example by reading their locations i have made to friends locally to me. Yes there are pros and cons but generally location can help. John.

I am of exactly the same view as Mark maybe not for the same reasons perhaps.  If I cant be a member of a forum because I object to being told that I have to put my location on or if other mayhemers are offended that they dont know whereI  live then I too will cease to be a member. I dont see a reason to be told I have to put my location on here.  Surpisingly, being an active model boater I do actually know where my local club is.  It sails in the park about 100 yards from my door, now there's a shock.    And if Im selling or buying something I might just get involved in a pm exchange to advise of location.

It is quite obvious,
Firstly no-one would be forced to include your location.
Secondly, if you are asking a question about suppliers it does help to know which continent you are on!!
I know some members won't answer questions without the op having a location as they have been caught before answering a question fully then finding out that all the answers are useless as the questioner does not have access to the suppliers due to location.

Have the members that won't answer the questions heard of online ordering?

It seems to me that everytime a suggestion like this asked the same people suddenly start shouting their heads off over something rather trival as your rough location in the world.  For example to say that you would leave forum over this seems to be (my opinion) to be silly, surely if you don't agree with putting your location don't do it, don't moan about it, the adminstrators won't force you do something you don't want to do, it was just a suggestion!  After all I know that a least one of you has in the past put his location on this forum for all to see, and for whatever reason he does not want to put it back on thats up to him but as I was told as a child, if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all.
After all we are here for one thng and one thing only- model boats. :-))

Yes I thought that would be an answer.
One question was from Australia and the freight charges from UK was extremely expensive as the suppliers suggested were UK based.
The question raised was do I HAVE to include my location, I have answered that the answer is simply NO.
But a reasoned explanation was given why it helps and helps others to help any questions.

This is a no brainer and makes commonsence which seems to have died. <:( <:(

Am amazed at responces, such as being forced to put location, will take my bat and ball, etc. >>:-( >>:-( <*< <*<

In case you people have missed the point, this is a global forum and I don't recall you being asked to post your address, but a Location O0 O0

In other words what part of the world are you in, don't assume or your an ass, also, what's the point in you giving me a phone number for follow up or assistance if it is on the other side of the world and uncontactable. %% %% {-) {-)

How to update your Location details:

             1.    Click on "profile" above  -
             2.    Click on Forum Profile Information
             3.    In   "Location"   enter your nearest Town.  ( NO post codes! )
             4.    Save and exit.

I don't see anything in Ken's post that says you MUST put your location in your profile. Some people don't read posts thoroughly before replying, but jump in boots and all. I would have thought that the reasons for indicating your location were glaringly obvious, so I'm not going to repeat them but, at the end of the day the choice is yours - membership of Mayhem is not dependent upon you stating your location. I have always had a fairly precise location in my profile and, after 6 years no one has come knocking on my door as a result.

In cannot see the problem , someone posted last week about wanting a product that he could get local to him but had no location in his post or his information how are people supposed to answer, the only reason I can see not wanting my location posting is if I was a troll. O0

Hi Guys

There is an I.T way around the debate that should suit most people.
At initial registration the field is mandatory................ so the box is always filled.
After initial registration the box can immediately be hidden by visiting your profile.

The vast majority of people will just leave it visible, but those members in a witness
protection scheme / being stalked / a Troll / or just very private people can hide the
box with ease.

My own view is that stating a county, or NE England, S Wales can surely do no harm.

Thank you for all your interest.
There has been a surge of updating, so thank you for registering these helpful details.

Just to clarify a few things

Do not indicate your street or house, email addresses, telephone numbers.

It is OK if you don't want to let folks know where you are.

It's just a request to help things go better for the club members.

Perhaps when the River Maintenance Committee asked the good citizens of Dorset to make a donation they all got the wrong idea?!   %)

Just had a couple of replies to my "smiths Docks" series. One from an ex-apprentice there. Neither showed a location.
This is really not a nice way to go about things. Talking to people who are perhaps real, or just ephemeral is not a good way to conduct any sort of conversation.
Make "Location" a requirement for posting. BY.

Perhaps it can be listed and a consensus taken  :-)) :-))
