I am refurbishing a recent purchase and have noticed that it has a planked hull visible from inside
with the outer hull covered with a thin sheet - all of which is balsa!
I thought it was rather light!
I noticed a few splits down the outer hull -quite small and have repaired with a resin paste.

Has anyone any views on balsa contructed hulls and their strengths. All my boats are of ply construction
which can stand a few knocks!

with a balsa hull its all about the covering personally i would sand the hole thing dawn and give it a covering of light weight twill weave cloth and resin

Hi there, I use heavyweight modeling tissue ( the kind that goes on model aircraft wings ) and plenty of dope, it is amazing how strong balsa becomes with this treatment.
