Te Hauraki of Auckland, New Zealand
« on: July 03, 2016, 11:03:14 pm »

I have started building an old tug from the Auckland Harbour Board from New Zealand. This one is kind of special to me as she is from the area I was raised and I know the harbours there very well.

It will be 1/16 scale which makes her just on 30 inches long. I unfortunately got my beam wrong by 2 inches so she will be a little fatter than she should be. I may just make this one the prototype and build a second one that is correct in her dimensions.

This is one fo the few photos I have to work from and the dimensions on the site above I only got this week so I am doing okay with how close I was in scale.

Here is the video of the water test of my last build, the Lady Lou. Sorry in advance for the sound  :embarrassed:

Have you checked with Russel at Tugboats.co.nz? He is a mine of information about NZ workboats.

I followed the link but there is not a lot there. The only link there that looked like it would work but didn't was the mail me one. Might not work for people outside NZ.
Pity, from the little I could see it looked like an interesting site.

Thanks to Steve Mahoney's detective work I have been in touch with the owner of the Te Hauraki and he sent me some wonderful pics of the Te Hauraki on the hard stand.
Unfortunately they show that my guess at  her design was way off so it will be back to the drawing, unless of course the owner can get me the set of model plans he is going to ask about at the Maritime Museum in Auckland drawn up by their model makers when they built the model for the museum.

Fingers crossed on the plans, and it looks like I have a lot of metal work to do under the stern.

The model I have started will become the Te Manukau and will run alongside the Te Hauraki.
