WHAT IS THIS POND YACHT?
« on: May 13, 2012, 12:29:48 pm »

Hello,

I have recently bought this 48" Pond Yacht to restore, but does anyone know what type of boat it is ment to be? Is it a Yewl or Ketch?

I have tried researching for other models like this but cannot find a single thing, if anyone knows of any others you have seen like this i would very much appreciate any help you can give. And also what age it may be?

Ideally a photo would be great to help me as a guide when restoring. And as far as i can tell it originaly had a red underside by the keel and white above it with just the deck area just varnished. It also has a detachable Keel and rudder.

Thanks

Your mizzen mast is aft of the rudder....it's a yawl.

Thankyou that was most helpful.

If anyone else knows of any other examples that would help me greatly. And also rigging plans

Perhaps I should expand.

Tom Cunliffe in his book, "Hand, Reef and Steer" (my current favourite) says:
Quote
If you're looking for an easy distinction between a yawl and a ketch it is this: conventionally at least, a ketch's mizzen is stepped forward of the rudder post, while that of a yawl stands abaft it.

The mizzen of a yawl is smaller than that of a ketch. The main purpose it serves in a gaffer is to shorten the boom of a cutter, and allow a mizzen staysail, albeit a small one, to be set when circumstances allow.

And so on...and on....and on.
