Escort carrier plans or drawings?
« on: April 11, 2007, 08:50:52 pm »

I've been toying with the idea of building a simple scale escort carrier of WWII vintage.  I'm drawn to the USS Gambier Bay and the HMS Argus.  Both had very interesting paint.    Can anyone point me in the direction of plans or drawings of either?  I'm not planning a museum quality model but something simpler that looks the part from a meter or two away.

Thanks,
Mike

Didn't Glynn Guest do something like this a while back?

Hi,
Have been toying with the idea myself.
The Floating drydock in the US do the Gambier bay drawings
available in 96th/ 192nd and 72nd scale.

Have bought drawings off them before found them good quality
only thing I found is that the ink is blue they use (hence blueprint I guess)

bellow is a link that takes you to the drawings I buy

Colin & Colin-- Thanks forthe quick replies.  I searched for the Glynn Guest and didn't see a carrier, just a few other warships.  I have seen the Floating Drydock site as well.  I'm trying to find something simple on the web before I resort to such detailed drawings.

Following attachement is all that I have found online.

I think Glynn's plan was called USS Bodego Bay, or something like that. If I remember rightly, the name was sort of joke, but I never got it.

Does he have a site?  The site that I found was called something like "The X-List"  I think.

Thanks,

Anyone know what escort carrier this is supposed to be?   Searched HMS Sultan and have come up flat.  I'm just about to order it but I am curious.

Regards,
Mike

Added:  I think that I've figured it out.  I think that it's the Ameer or Ruler Class of the American Attacker Class.  See the following:  http://www.answers.com/topic/bogue-class-escort-carrier

Sorry these are not plans or drawings but they might be of interest to you.
The 1st one is of HMS Atherline in Sydney during WW2, and the 2nd is of "Bardic" taken in Auckland during 1957.
Bardic being my 1st ship. She was an escort carrier during the war and re-converted to a cargo ship later. She was launched as Escort Carrier "Willapa" for the USN and renamed by the RN as HMS "Puncher". Eventually ending up as "Bennevis" until broken up in 1973.
She was of the "open shelterdeck" type (as I expect all the C3 types to have been) which meant that you could load a car into No.1 hatch and roll it all the way through to No.5.
I always found that the easiest identification point was the huge "Bull-Ring" at the top of the stem.
They may have been the ideal hull for a "Mac" carrier, but it was the only ship I was ever seasick on!

Hi Mike

Open the latest forum update page click on Gambier Bay. This will open up to show details of my latest build. The model is 1/96 scale  length 65 in  beam across the flight deck 15in and from keel to highest point  on the mast 18 in.  H.M.S  Sultan was from the Glynn Guest range of models  i built one and  found that it rolled when large rudder movement's  where applied  opp rudder had to be applied to right the model. Scale of H.M.S  Sultan was 1/144  and was based on the ruler class.

Amazing thing about this thread is that it has got so far without mentioning that the Bodega Bay was a free plan in the June 2003 issue of Model Boats.  Perhaps someone has a copy of this plan they could offer Mike?

Hal-- I like the sound of that.  If anyone could lend me a copy I'd pay all posting cost and return it as soon as I make copies of the article and plans.  I've searched online for plans and back issues for Model Boat Magazine and again I've come up empty.

Hi Mike.

Send me your details and I will  copy the plan and send to you . One of our club members  built the Bodega Bay  and it sails really well.  Did you check out the model I am building?

By the way, Bodega Bay I think was a name used by Mr Guest and not relavant to any actual ship.

Hope this helps.

Stan--  Thanks for the kind offer.  I've just sent you a private message.  I'm in the US so please let me reimburse you for any copying and posting costs.

I have read it.  What a beauty.  A real work of art.  A ship with an interesting history and a very nice looking paint scheme.  Can't wait to see more photos of it on the water.  Perhaps some video?

I like to try to figure out which ship Mr Guest based his plan on.  He's very clever in naming them.

The weather here has been terrible of late, cold and very windy.  I was hoping to ballast my submarine and then test the current draw of the motors that I received the other day that will power the big CV-6 USS Enterprise I have.  I have a small number of props that I'd like to test on 12 volts direct drive.  I have a feeling that we'll be inside most of the weekend as a Nor'easter is coming.  We may have snow on Monday!  A bit unusual on the east coast in New Jersey for this time of year.

Mike

Stan,
I emailed you yesterday to thank you as the article and plans have arrived.  I took a look at your Gambier Bay again.  Very nice.  I really like the operating elevator.
