Futaba Gold 2.4 Ghz Conversion
« on: May 15, 2012, 03:24:54 pm »

Hello all
Just wondered if it's at all possible to convert a FUTABA GOLD FG SERIES  transmitter to 2.4 Ghz.
It appears to have the same 35Mhz module as my 8UA which I converted a couple of years ago with a Corona module.
I really am a fan of this series and had more than one years ago.

I would expect so. Haven't had one of those, but I have converted two other Futaba sets to 2.4ghz with Corona kit.

I converted my Robbe Futaba FC16 and my Dad's Challenger, which is a mid '80's set. I had to cut a single track on the latter to cut the PPM feed to the tuning board. Both sets retain their original tuners so you can switch between low and high frequency using a toggle switch

Usually the tuner is a separate board which you can unplug. If you're not bothered about retaining the older frequency, then the conversion is usually very straightforward.

any Tx can be converted It is easier if it has a Buddy lead or a module, if not you could eather try for the circuit diagram or use a scope to find an output to use for the signal wire.

I have converted 3 different sets ( although not a futaba gold) its quite straightforward to do if you can use a soldering iron competently. I don't own a scope, I used a crystal earpiece to find the signal wire. Remove the plug from the earpiece & connect 1 wire to 0V & touch the other wire on various points until you here a pulsed tone. As the earpiece has a very high impedance theres no danger of blowing anything up & they are only a couple of pounds to buy, scopes are a touch more to buy  :-))

I just looked up this set, and realised it hase a plug-in module at the back. Should be a piece of cake to convert this one then, you just need the Futaba compatible module from Corona.
