Hi David,
Thanks for the picture, yes they are rather odd looking. Apparently they were a bit wet and didn't go to sea if the weather was poor. Two were lost, one to a collision with another vessel and it came off worse and the other was mined. So I have heard the rationale was a very low profile and to ram any sub on the surface. Later in the war they carried depth charges.

Very good picture with plenty of detail thank you very much a welcome addition to my file when I start building one later this year.

Daryl;  here is the website the picture came from:  http://www.clydesite.co.uk/clydebuilt/warships/vessel.asp?id=5141

Roman; thanks for posting those pics - that's a very interesting looking vessel!  A bit more research required for me, I think...

Barry Gibson has also very kindly e-mailed me these pictures of a preserved New Zealand 2nd Class Torpedo Boat which he has allowed me to post here.

I have also found a very interesting article about the ship here:  http://www.nzmaritime.co.nz/thornycroft.htm

Yep, that is exactly what I've mentioned a bit earlier - the remains of the NZ torpedo boat DEFENDER. The steam engine of this boat is also still 'alive' and in far better condition rather than the hull  :). One day I will travel to New Zealand to visit the DEFENDER...and her steam engine ;D.

The engine is defiantly in better condition than the boat. I was amazed how small it is, for some reason I'd expected it to be bigger.
