Whilst it really doesn't matter, my preference would be for the lightest shade of grey, for contrast when applying the white finishing coat.
Talking painting in general, even a pink primer would suit (contrast) for white top/finish coat.

WOA stop right there as a Professional painter I certainly would NOT advocate the use of a pink primer under a white gloss simply because Pink contains RED and RED is a well know bleeder. This could well cause the gloss White paint to take on a pinkish hue.

Yes I know there is Pink primer BUT this is used on woodwork usually and is overcoated with 2 coats of grey to seal it.Yes also there is a red primer available and this can be very useful when red gloss is being used.

I have seen this time after time when Diy car bods repair their cars and also I have seen it on model boats where red oxide primer is used to paint a hull and white then goes over it resulting in a pinkish white.
Make your own minds up but this is Gospel it WILL happen, sorry if I have come over as bombastic but i do know what I am talking about

Sounds just like my Grandparents old house, the 2nd floor landing had been painted in a lovely colour of somesort of red, They bought it in 1947 (Built 1910) when I left it in 1999 the red was still coming through despite heaven knows how many layers of white had been put on in all that time , and I painted it at least 3 times %%
